THE LEGEND OF MELUSINE
Mélusine is a Breton faery a woman who transformed into a 'serpent from the waist down' every Saturday, and is usually represented as a half-serpent or double-tailed mermaid. Melusine, reigned over the faeries of the forest of Colombiers, in Poitou, France . One night she met Raimond de Lusignan, a count of Poitou who came to a fountain in the forest called the “Fountain of Thirst”, or the “Fountain of the Fae”, (because of the many miraculous things which occurred there). Seeking only to quench his thirst, Raimond stumbled upon Melusine in the midst of performing a moon ritual with two other fae ladies beside the fountain. Melusine’s intoxicating beauty and her charming character captivated Raimond's heart, and enamorment was mutual. She married him on the sole condition that he never try to find out what she did each Saturday. He agreed, and she vowed that if he breached his oath, she would be forced to leave forever-- in spite of her great love for him. With her magic and wealth she built the castle of Lusignan for him, beside fountain where they met. One day Raimond could no longer contain his curiosity, and he followed his wife into the cave to which she withdrew every Saturday. There he saw Mélusine in her true form. Her lovely human female form ended at her waist where she became serpentine, with scales of grey and sky-blue mixed with white. However, it was not horror of her supernatural form that seized him then, but a profound anguish at the sudden realization that through his breach of faith he would surely lose her forever. When she realized she had been seen, Mélusine wept and stretched out her arms, which turned into wings, transforming into a dragon, and she flew off into the air, never to take human form again, but vowing as she flew away to keep watch over his castle, and to observe devotedly the births and deaths of her descendants therein until the Lusignan fell. She is said to be ancestress of the royal bloodline of England, and her children included the King of Cyprus, the King of Armenia, the King of Bohemia, the Duke of Luxembourg, and the Lord of Lusignan.
