The humble light yellow menu printed in black could hardly foretell the riches inside.....
It is a lightweight cardboard tri-fold menu measuring 12 3/4" by 8 1/2" open and 4 1/4" by 8 1/2" folded closed. The outside has a sketch of San Francisco's skyline viewed from the bay in front of the world famous Ferry Building. The restaurant was located at 808 Pacific Avenue near Stockton.
The menu probably looks to be from the 1940s. It was designed to be a souvenir and could be mailed as a postcard- if you addressed it and handed it to your waiter they would mail it for you!
The restaurant's specialty was Crepes Suzette and it offered French food that was charcoal broiled, wine and special desserts. All dinners included:
Fresh Louisiana Prawns, Relishes, Assorted Salami, Celery, Olives, Mixed Green Salad with French Dressing, Onion Soup or Soup du Jour, Potatoes, Vegetables, Ice Cream, Assorted Cheese and Coffee, Tea or Milk! (Hope you're hungry.....)
Calf's Sweetbreads a la Parisienne: $2.50
Frog's Legs Provencal $3.25
Roast Rack of Lamp $2.75
Broiled Squab with Bacon and Jelly $3.00
Chateaubriand for Two $7.00
The menu proclaims that "French wines are back at their best" and includes a list of house whites, house reds, American Sparkling Burgundies, Champagne and Special bottles. Their best champagne was Clicquot, Yellow Label, Very Dry 1937 for $21...for a magnum!
The menu looks new and shows little sign of age, in great condition.
Ooo la la.....
