This copper box measures 4'' wide (10 cm) and is 2.5'' deep
Excluding the handle and including the cover, it stands 2.5'' tall (6.5 cm).
Metal is thin and case weighs only 3.5 oz (100 gr).
Larger metal cases were designed to hold the soap (with holes in the bottom for the water to drain), a coarse mitt, and webbing of the date-palm or other fibers for lathering.
Hamam visits are said to be as much about socialization as they were about personal hygiene. Since this case is much smaller than a regular sized soap box, I imagine it was either purely decorative or made for young ladies, to let them be busy with their own soap dish and leave the mothers alone :)
This rustic copper piece has tin coating that has worn off to reveal a pinkish brown that merges so nicely with the grey. Minor dents and bumps have blended with the ornamentation. There is considerable corrosion with many surface scratches and darkened spots, especially on the inside surface and the bottom. Box needs cleaning. Hinge is firmly secured with pins. The latch is a little bent but performs its duty very well.
This piece would be a unique addition to a bathroom cabinet. It can also be used as a candle votive cup holder, jewelry or trinket box. All in all a wonderful conversation piece!
