A famous heavyweight-championship boxing match, between James J. “Gentleman Jim” Corbett and “Man from Boston” John L. Sullivan, took place in New Orleans in 1892. It was one of the first important boxing matches in which the contenders were required to wear gloves. Afterwards, “Gentleman Jim” emerged as the world’s new champion, ending a long record for Sullivan.
