This rugged and beautiful Garden Settee was handcrafted by me using the graceful, arching branches and clear boards from eastern white cedar trees and a handful of screws. It is one of a kind and a labor of love. The overall dimensions are 52"wide x 29"deep x 60" high (130x72.5x150cm), with a 44"wide x 22"deep seat (110x55cm) .
The branches came from a local woodsman/fisherman who practices sustainable harvesting by select cutting his trees and bringing the felled trunks and branches out with his horse during winter months when the ground is covered with snow. This reduces any harm done to his forested land. The boards came from a local cedar mill.
There is so much to love about cedar. It's a wonderful wood to work with. The wood is light, soft, aromatic and quite resistant to decay in adult trees. Due to its durability, it's used for shingles, boats, canoes, poles and posts and it makes both beautiful and practical outdoor furniture.
No matter how simple, primitive or rustic this style of furniture may appear to be, it continues to be timeless and a classic in todays world. Perhaps now, even more so than ever, twig or stick style furniture is appreciated for its raw, unprocessed nature (never mind its beauty) especially because of our environmentally conscious times.
This settee will easily and quite naturally fit into any landscape. It was a joy to build, is a joy to sit in and will last a good long time. Cedar has stood the test of time. I know of cedar rail fences in our neighbourhood that are well over 100 years old!
