thaumatrope, wonder rotating

The thaumatrope is a kind of toy consisting of a disc with two different images on both sides and a piece of string on each side of the disc. Both images are joined by twisting the rope between the fingers, making the hard turn and face change quickly. The rapid rotation produces which, optically, and the principle of persistence of vision, the illusion that both images are together or create a small animation. Its invention is often attributed to John Ayrton Paris, that would have built to demonstrate the principle of persistence of vision, before the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1824.
