Bamboo is comparatively new material in the textile industry. Lately it is more and more used by the yarn designers as pure yarn or as a part of yarn mixes. Bamboo is becoming a hit among those who tend to natural fibers.
Several Asian cultures believe that humanity emerged from a bamboo stem. A Philippine legend tells that the first man and the first woman each emerged from split bamboo stems on an island created after the battle of the elemental forces (Sky and Ocean). A Malaysian legend tell as a story of a man who dreams of a beautiful woman while sleeping under a bamboo plant; he wakes up and breaks the bamboo stem, discovering the woman inside. A Japanese folktale tells about a princess from the Moon emerging from a shining bamboo section.
In China the bamboo plant is a symbol of longevity, while in India it is a symbol of friendship. It happens that a bamboo forest surrounds a Shinto shrine in Japan as part of a sacred barrier against evil. Many Buddhist temples also have bamboo groves.
Bamboo fabric is known for its softness and boasts strong absorbency and anti-microbial properties. Yet long time it was impossible to make a bamboo yarn without the use of strong chemicals due to the shortness of the bamboo fiber itself. Only after the Beijing University developed a new Bamboo fabric the interest in bamboo clothing was created and began gaining popularity very fast. This concerns particularly those who are interested in using organic materials. Clothing from bamboo is soft and in some occasions comparable to cashmere.
Bamboo is a renewable, biodegradable and non-polluting resource that grows without the use of pesticides. One of the outstanding features of the 100% bamboo yarn is its breathability and coolness. The fiber structure of these yarns, enhanced by the spinning process, have microscopic holes that wick away moisture and facilitate its evaporation. This makes the garments made from 100% bamboo yarns mostly comfortable for warm-to-extremely-hot weather climates. These qualities offer natural insulation as well. Pure bamboo yarns have natural antibacterial, deodorant and non-allergenic qualities that remain in the fabric even after many washes, rendering this yarn ideal for socks and children’s wear.
Bamboo yarns have a lovely sheen and a beautiful drape, and have a very similar character to viscose rayon (also plant-derived) and ramie. Bamboo fabrics provide superior durability.
CARE:
Pure bamboo yarn! It is advisably you wash the bolero by hand in 86° F (30° C) warm water. Do not twist! Use soft liquid detergents. I always use Purlan but you might chose any other wool shampoo. Dry flat on a towel. Do not iron. Do not twist. Yet you can bleach with precaution if you need. After bleaching you may wash with a textile conditioner to keep the softness.
