Tokiyo, my mother and the maker lives in a historical town in japan once renowned for its weaving and fabric dying industry for Kimono. Making of Kimono involves much of time consuming traditional hand crafting and knowledge on what the nature provides : silk worm farming, dying of silk threads for weaving, hand weaving, once woven into bands, all hand sewn with minimal cuts and waste with reuse purposes in mind. As we all know, Kimono and the traditional industries involved have disappeared from our daily life after the war and Westernisation.
The silk Kimono were considered very luxury, treated as valued possessions and worn only on special occasions - this is probably why many have survived decades in such great vintage conditions.
While making this garment, Tokiyo enjoyed imagining all the craft persons involved in this beautiful silk fabric becoming. She expresses her pleasure in giving it another life for the new unknown wearer.
