Just picked from the vine, this farm fresh tomato is handmade with stoneware clay. It looks juicy enough to eat and would brighten any spot that needs a splash of color.

And since mother nature never gives us a fruit or vegetable that is just one color, my tomato is a wonderful blend of red, orange, yellow and pink glaze to give it the color mother nature intended.

Always up for a challenge, I love to custom mix glazes and hand paint in layers to give a nice watercolor effect. Sometimes, and especially with red fruits or vegetables, the piece will be finish-fired several times layering glazes to get the right color. This is the case with my tomato; it was kiln-fired a total of 4 times, with 3 separate layers of color, to give it its special colors.

Tomato's crown and stem are glazed in a green, gun metal and pearly metallic glaze to add glow to the top, as well.

Tomato is hollow like all of my fruits and vegetables. I do enjoy the challenge of sculpting hollow and crossing my fingers that they don't explode in the kiln. And, even though they are hollow, they are heavy like stoneware clay promises to be. Tomato is roughly 3 inches wide and 2-3/4 inches tall.

This is the perfect gift for a tomato lover, and even if that tomato lover is you.
Happy summer!
