This is a vintage 1961 Replogle 12 inch Starlight Globe. Designed and edited by Gustav Brueckmann, cartographer. Replogle Globes, Inc. Chicago. c1961. Shiny gores over pasteboard, time dial at North Pole. The oceans are finished in black rather than the more common blue/green, and the continental shelves in white. The globe shows nautical distances and Equinoctial Colure or the International Date Line.
The mounting of this Globe is a wonderful representation of the Mid Century Modern design style, blended with retro features. It features a chrome finished gimbal mount with retro accents that rotates vertically and horizontally. Diameter of the model is 12 inches with a total height of about 17 inches.
This model is displaying the political borders of 1961, as it shows the United Arab Republic (1958-61), a venture between Egypt and Syria, which lasted only a very short period. Interestingly only Egypt is labeled as the UAR. Since the legend of this model no longer identifies French West Africa (dissolved in 1960) it simplified the task of identifying the age of the Globe.
This Globe is in good to very good condition, the colors are bright and vivid. The gores are all tightly held. The equator tape is present and intact. There are a few very light scratches scattered throughout the globe. There is some light soiling yet nothing detracting! The meridian and base are also in good conditon with minimal pitting, no oxidation and light scratches to the base.
A fine piece showing a very specific glimpse in time at the very beginnings of the cold war!!
As always, ENJOY!!!
