This jar was thrown on the wheel. It is about 5.75 inches tall and 5.50 inches in diameter. This domed shaped jar is enhanced by three decorative feet.
After bisque firing, the body of the jar was glazed with a wonderful turquoise crackle glaze, that Steve makes. The lid and the foot were left unglazed.
The jar is then placed in a specially built raku kiln and heated until the glaze has melted. Still glowing with intense heat,it is removed from the kiln. This thermal shock causes the glaze to crackle.
Next the jar is placed into a container of sawdust. The sawdust ignites and produces a smoky atmosphere where carbon is absorbed into the unglazed clay and the crackled glaze.
Each piece has its own distinct crackle pattern and is unique in the way the carbon darkens the clay.
After it was raku fired, a hand sculpted bird was attached to the lid. We make these birds one at a time by hand. No molds were used!
There are 3 felt pads on the bottom of the jar to protect your furniture.
