The brooch was made in Pforzheim, Germany around 1900. We attribute it to the firm of Heinrich Levinger (Levinger & Bissinger) or to Karl Hermann (Hermann & Speck), as it is characteristic of their work but is not signed.
The brooch is marked Déposé, a French word used during the Art Nouveau period in France, Germany and Austria to show that a piece is a registered and protected design. It is also marked sterling silver.
The brooch takes the form of curling ginkgo leaves, a favourite art nouveau motif. It also displays some geometric Jugendstil aspects. It is set with translucent green and grey plique-à-jour enamel, with two red stones and three pearls.
The brooch is in excellent antique condition but the pin is loose in its c-clasp and will need a slight adjustment by a jeweller.
Width 1 1/8 inch / 27mm
Height 1 1/2 inch / 38mm
