and yet, during their long trudge thru Imperialism,
it was the Queens of England who ruled it with a gloved fist...
the India of today is a free India,
and is said to be an experience not to be missed.
when i see vivid images of the Festival of Colors, watch a Bollywood
extravaganza, or pore over a Banjara textile like this one,
i feel like i get the new India, and the old...
hustle and bustle, joyful smiles, third-eye bindi,
Kama Sutra eroticism, sacred cows, Hindu mysticism,
and the shy eyes of virgins under mirror encrusted scarves,
all of these are how India feels, then and now...
the Banjara tribe of nomads prefer the region of Rajasthan, but they still move across borders, and thru time, like all good nomads do...
arrayed in embroidered robes, silk sari, turbans, kuchi coins,
beaded medallions, and conch shell anklets, they are living artifacts
of a lifestyle some say has gone the way of the dodo.
and yet, this piece of India, this amazing Banjara patchwork, still exists.
and it was mailed to me wrapped in muslin and sealing wax and strong twine.
with it, i designed and constructed this one of a kind hobo bag,
in homage to the India of yore.
it is my fervent hope that she will find a good home
with someone who will carry her back there someday...
in order to experience the sights, sounds, tastes and smells
of old India, together.
