A real Birch Leaf is preserved in Sterling Silver to create a truly unusual piece. These species of trees are found throughout the United States and Europe. (Latin name: Betula).
Most people don't reveal how these are made, so I'll take the time to give you the lowdown. First, the leaves are picked and NOT allowed to dry out. Once that's done, it's immersed in a controlled acid bath that removes all but the woody veining. Then, a jewelry bale is attached and the leaf is carefully coated with another hardener and put in a copper or nickle hardening bath. There always has to be a pre-bath before the final "dipping" in a precious metal. After the copper (or sometimes nickle) bath, the leaves are then dipped in sterling silver.
The Birch leaf shape and Veining make it a gorgeous jewelry piece. The Silver will last a long time with minimal care.. It is a very sturdy item that my customers have worn for years. The best way to store it is in a little plastic bag (works for any jewelry!) and avoid any harsh chemicals.
A complementary 20" silver tone chain is included with your leaf , although you can use any chain (or color) you please, or hang on your own chain. . You could also use a ribbon or cord. . Or I can make as a hatpin/stickpin instead.
The Birch leaf is medium large .. about 1 1/4- 1 1/2" - 2 1/4"long 1" or so wide.
I have matching baby birch leaf earrings.
I can also do "doubles" or "triples" - custom work.
The necklace comes with a small glossy white pillow-type gift box (recyclable), along with a nice soft green card with a brief explanation of the plating process. Just tuck in the ends and you are good to go.
I also have necklaces available in Gold or Copper..they are spectacular!
I also have leaves in Cottonwood, Canadian Maple, Aspen, Pine Cones, and Birch leaves
