This colorful Moroccan basket features beautiful decoupaged pictures of Moroccan souks. The top of the basket has been carved in the traditional safif design often found on serving ware and the shape of many passageways. This is a large kettle gourd measuring 9" tall and 32" round! The inside glows remarkably; first painted with bright rainbow colors, overlaid with gold metallic acrylic paint & Pearl Ex pigments. The entire gourd has been coated inside and out with acrylic glaze and polyurethane sealant for added beauty and durability.
The most enduring part of this basket are the many handmade hamsa charms hanging all around this basket, embellished with all kinds of beads. The 3D pieces on the basket are the gourd chards leftover from carving the top of this basket. My inspiration for this gourd was my stay in Morocco some 20 years ago ~~ to the capital of Rabat, Tangiers and Marrakech ~~ and fond memories of all its beauty! I am a relatively new gourd artist, and until I researched pictures of the souks, I hadn't realized how often I saw gourds being used for many utilitarian purposes and their frequent presence in lots of the souks!
This charming basket would make an excellent addition to any room decor and a marvelous Mother's Day Gift!
Thank you for coming by my shop today. I am adding quite a few more new gourds this week, so come back again soon to check them out! Even I don't know what I'll add next.
