Inside this brightly painted red yellow and blue wooden circus train car, six cute baby circus animals, three on each rotating pedestal, are ready to perform and the ring master is ready to conduct. Wind the music box with the attached key in the back and the two pedestals on either side of the ring master turn to display each animal while the song “Talk to the Animals” plays. The baby animals are a Lion, Zebra, Hippo on one pedestal and an Elephant, Tiger and Giraffe on the other pedestal. They all seem to be playing along nicely! :)
The wind up mechanism works perfectly and the music is clear and bright. There is a scrape/chip which is noticeable on the top right corner in the front of the marquee and yellow trim. Other than that flaw, it is in mint condition. You could touch up the flaw with a little red and yellow paint.
It is a nice size (not tiny at all) and measures 6.5 inches tall, 7 inches wide and 4.5 inches deep. Marked “Chinese Craftsmen” and “Made in Taiwan”.
I know my little boy loves wind up music toys like this which are simple and clear sounding. He always smiles when he hears the music box we have and it makes for an excellent distraction at changing time. All four of the wheels on the bottom of the circus car do turn, but it does not seem like it was meant to do much rolling. It’s really for display and the music, not for any potentially rough child play.
For those not old enough to remember, the song "Talk to the Animals" was written for the film, Doctor Dolittle and performed by Rex Harrison. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 40th Academy Awards.
You may also have heard this song performed by Alvin and the Chipmunks, Bobby Darin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Roger Moore, the Muppet animals on The Muppet Show in the 70's, and more recently, Chief Wiggum of The Simpsons (Hank Azaria), in the episode "Homer's Barbershop Quartet".
