This Continental pistol table lighter was manufactured in Japan while occupied by U.S. and Allied military forces from the end of World War II in 1945 until April 1952, when the San Francisco Peace Treaty signed in 1951 came into force.. The lighter base is marked "Made In Occupied Japan" (see photo #2). Because of international hostility toward Japan in the aftermath of World War II, the trademark “Occupied Japan” was intended to assure consumers that their purchase was in no way contributing to the reviled powers of the pre-war era. This sort of figural lighter was originally designed to be a lighthearted conversation piece that also lights cigarettes. It uses a semi-automatic firing mechanism. Pull the trigger and the lighter mounted on the gun barrel opens and lights. Simply close the snuffer to extinguish the flame and reset the firing mechanism.

This lighter will be shipped with a flint and without fluid. (Please do not store this lighter with the flint though, as it will deteriorate and become impacted over time.) I've completely disassembled and cleaned its firing mechanism, unblocked the flint chamber, and trimmed/tested the original wick. Its firing mechanism has been disassembled, cleaned, and restored to full working order. It works very well, with only an occasional misfire (i.e. sparks, but does not light). Nothing to be concerned about though -- misfires are pretty common with antique novelty lighters. This modestly historic lighter is in excellent condition all around. I've provided high quality photos to offer the best preview of this lighter. Please take a look and feel free to ask any questions.
