Most Mexican hair accessories take the form of a mass produced commercial comb or barrette mount with a metal heading, commonly in silvertone material known as Aplaca (Alpacca). This is commonly decorated with a combination of enamel and mother of pearl or abalone shell inlay in the form of flowers, stars or leaves. Many of the traditional patterns used have a distinctive Art Deco look,
Much “silver” jewelry from Mexico is made of Alpaca (Alpacca). Alpacca was a tradename for nickel silver and for electro plated nickel silver and now used as a generic name for an all-nickel silver, especially in South America countries. More commonly spelled "Alpaca" it is also called New Silver. Alpaca does not lose its brightness over time, or become rusty.
A lively interest in humble Mexican folk artistry developed in the United States as early as the l920's, along with an appreciation for emerging Mexican artists. Mexican silver jewelry, with its impressive craftsmanship, imagination, and exoticism, offered North Americans an opportunity to purchase on a small scale an authentic work of art that shared its roots with major movements in contemporary intellectual tastes.
Within Mexico, artist colonies arose which produced enormously influential silver jewelry from the 1930's through the 1950’s. The aesthetic of the 1960's and 1970's brought its own influences to Mexican silver, which continues to be made and sold today in extraordinary quantity.
