A Toothbrush rug is a very old way to make rugs. Chances are good your great-grandmother had toothbrush rugs in her house. This rug is 100% recycled. The material is from 4 re-purposed bedsheets, so it will not shrink or run, as it has already been washed many times. Even the tool I use (in the picture) is made from re-purposed plastic picnic knife.
It is not crocheted, nor is it braided (braided rugs can split in time,if the thread gets weak)...but each knot is individually put in and entwined in the previous row making the rugs extremely durable. It is heavy, and lays flat. This rug is almost 4 pounds. I would recommend a rubber slip mat be put under it. It is also reversible, so you can get twice the amount of wear time before laundering.
You can run a vacuum over it, and wash it in a washing machine. I throw mine in the dryer until it is just damp, then lay them flat to air dry.
