This is a truly beautiful wand made from the wood of a Blackthorn tree. It has a very slight S-curve and fits perfectly into your hand, remaining well balanced. It's also quite stout, which means it's tough enough to withstand the wear and tear incurred when carrying it to rituals and isn't likely to arrive broken because you threw something into the bag on top of it. The hardness and density of the wood give this wand a satisfyingly solid feel and a pleasing weightiness for the perfect heft. There are seventeen knots in a widdershins spiral towards the tip, and each one is different. The bark is a gorgeous glossy rich mahogany colour that makes a perfect foil for the russet tone of the exposed wood. The tactile contrast is also fascinating, making you want to keep running your fingertips along the surface.
In common with most Blackthorn wands, I don't think this would be suitable for a novice. I can see it settling down well with an older person, man or woman, but not with anyone very young. It has an abundance of the rather forbidding, steely toughness that's so characteristic of this type of wood and is the main reason why I love it so much... as well as the main reason why so many folks don't like it at all. I like it a lot, which is no surprise as Blackthorn's my favourite wood and I've never yet had anything made from this wood that I haven't wanted to keep! It has a tough and protective air, and it also feels a little distant or aloof, although I'm sure that will change with the rightful owner; Blackthorn is rarely easy to get to know and seems to give its loyalty somewhat grudgingly, but once you have it on your side it will never let you down.
Also known as Quickthorn or Sloe. Blackthorn provides very strong protection, especially of the home, and can be used in magic to deter unwanted visitors. It is said to protect against malevolent magic. It can also be used in exorcism.
