In keeping with a more rustic and primitive expression, these stoneware bowls are not thrown on a pottery wheel. They're made by hand from clay slabs and coils to give them a nice, clean-lined farmhouse feel.
The khaki-tan stoneware clay I use for them is really stiff, rough and coarse. In sculpting lingo, it's a clay with barely any plasticity. It's really difficult and unforgiving to work with, but it's great for interrupting the thinning and smoothing of the glaze’s fine glass particles so the clay’s texture remains. Although it's a hit and miss adventure, it's also great for achieving burned-out speckles and edges when it wants to cooperate with me. This clay really loves these glazes giving me exactly what I wanted - a really nice and rustic, rusty red-brown accented, weathered feel.
This made-to-order (or custom order) set will include 2 rustic bowls. The smaller bowl is a quiet, pastel mint color with rusty red speckles inside, a rusty red rim and a rusty red tinted and speckled exterior. It roughly measures a relaxed 5-3/8 inches round at the rim, 1-3/4 inches tall and gently curves from a 2-1/4 inch base to the rim. The larger bowl is a creamy banana color with a hint of rusty red speckles inside, a rusty red rim and just a hint of rusty red speckles on the exterior. It roughly measures a relaxed 6-3/4 inches round at the rim, 2-1/2 inches tall and gently curves from a 2-1/4 inch base to the rim.
These charming rustic bowls make beautiful, simple and understated decorating pieces, as well as lovely accents as serving bowls. They're food, oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. They're sure to add a touch of rustic country charm no matter their use.
