sarawearsskirts: it's awful, i absolutely can't stand the way it is right now
stellaloella: then redesign it
sarawearsskirts: i got the IRC transcript, thank you so much.
stellaloella: would it be easier as a dreamweaver page then in WordPress?
sarawearsskirts: i have been trying to think of a better way to overhaul it
sarawearsskirts: i think dreamweaver would be better. set up as a table instead of just in WP
sarawearsskirts: that might be my big project this afternoon
stellaloella: it's 11:00, we should inlock the room
sarawearsskirts: yep
Doors unlocked.
stellaloella: *unlock

sarawearsskirts: hello, everyone! we'll get started in just a moment.
GlassCat joined the room
DBrownDesigns: While we are waiting, how many teams are you all on?
smashing: just one for me
virtuallori: 2
willowglass: just one - EGA
SweetyPrize: bajillion
Hoolyghans: 2 NJ and FAST
Please vote: are you on multiple teams?
GeminiMoonMosaics: one, EMA
Shutterkate: 2
GlassCat: One is all I can handle, we are pretty active.
catrocks: one for me nj - i had to quit the others - the email was overwhelming!
ZestyB joined the room
DBrownDesigns: just joined #5, EJA, JET, EtsyBead,Indiana, Filigree
Vote results: 9 yay, 7 nay, 2 abstain
sarawearsskirts: so about half and half, very good.
Please vote: had you ever heard of the concept of a street team before etsy?
beadartandbubbles: Poo I can't stay - it's 4pm here, the kids are running wild...wish I could stick around!
sarawearsskirts: okay, again very half and half.
Vote results: 9 yay, 8 nay, 2 abstain
PaperScissorsArt joined the room
beadartandbubbles left the room
Please vote: have you ever participated in a street team other than etsy's?
PaperScissorsArt: Hello!
SweetyPrize: i find i have to educate a lot of members on what a street team is
sarawearsskirts: okay, so about half of the people who were familiar with street teams prior to etsy had participated in one. great!
Vote results: 4 yay, sarawearsskirts: okay, well, today i guess i'd like to discuss how a street team in the traditional sense is similiar and dissimiliar to what Etsy teams are.
sarawearsskirts: here's the wikipedia entry on street teams, for those who only know the term from etsy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_team
sarawearsskirts: basically, it's a grass-roots, word of mouth form of promotion
sarawearsskirts: mainly for cultural things - bands, motion pictures, festivals, etc.
Shutterkate: yea i'd only ever heard it used with band promotion before etsy
PaperScissorsArt: it seems to be growing on the political front tho
sarawearsskirts: right, that's a typical use for a street team
catrocks: Yea, we used street teams to promo upcoming events on broadway
sarawearsskirts: candidates do rely on volunteers to spread their campaign and things.
sarawearsskirts: and it's growing as an online thing, as well as an in-person thing, obviously
sarawearsskirts: myspace and things make it easy to disperse information cheaply and easily about people and events.
PaperScissorsArt: do you think the idea of it has been lost in a way?
sarawearsskirts: do i think this idea has been lost here on etsy?
PaperScissorsArt: in general
sarawearsskirts: i think we've formed a sort of hybrid of street teams here on Etsy,
PaperScissorsArt: from what I remember growing up, a street team did A LOT of the promoting
sarawearsskirts: which is why i typically refer to them as Etsy teams, not street teams.
sarawearsskirts: i think many street teams still do a lot of promoting.
sarawearsskirts: flyering, pamphleting, tabling.
sarawearsskirts: chalking, word of mouth.
PaperScissorsArt: maybe in more urban settings
catrocks: I wonder if you have a better way for teams to communicate than Yahoo Groups - I cannot manage getting emails that say GREAT every 2 seconds. Any suggestions?
SweetyPrize: my team uses a combo of in person and online, with bulk online
sparetimecrafts joined the room
PaperScissorsArt: and I am only speakinf from experience of my team
sarawearsskirts: things that require man power, but aren't necessarily high-budget by any means. yes, probably more successful or popular in cities.
sarawearsskirts: yahoo groups has a notification setting -you can switch it to get one lump email each week.
Shutterkate: cat you can chagne your yahoo settings so you don't receive messages individually in emails
sarawearsskirts: anyway, back to teams.
liskidder: Yes (change it to daily digest)
andymathis joined the room
Shutterkate: and just receive a daily summary. or only receive messages flagged as important
catrocks: ahhhh duh!
sarawearsskirts: i've been doing a lot of thinking about how Etsy teams are different than trad. street teams.
PaperScissorsArt: oooh share :)
sarawearsskirts: a big difference, in my opinion, is that Etsy teams market and promote not only Etsy.com, but their own team
DBrownDesigns: It is different being an internet team versus a local team
sarawearsskirts: which is very unique from other street team situations.
sparetimecrafts left the room
virtuallori: and ourselves, along with our team
sarawearsskirts: yes, location vs. global teams are different experiences
sparetimecrafts joined the room
DBrownDesigns: and yes to promoting the team and promoting etsy at the same time
sparetimecrafts left the room
sarawearsskirts: so i guess i'd love it if we could all just think about this and discuss it for this session, and see what we get from it
virtuallori: we have a stake in the promotion
virtuallori: it's not just love of a third party
SweetyPrize: i think this stems from the fact that we are not the 'fans' part of the original street team
SweetyPrize: we are the 'band' too
sarawearsskirts: i feel like being on an Etsy team is like being on the front lines, in a sense, because you are promoting Etsy, but probably mentioning your shop in doing so
stellaloella: very true
sarawearsskirts: right
smashing: yeah we are band plus roadie lus groupie :)
sarawearsskirts: you're actively engaged and invested in what you're promoting.
Hoolyghans: promoting our own shops also promotes etsy
liskidder: Can we move people to the bottom of the round table because when they talk their popups get cut off
sarawearsskirts: exactly. it works both ways.
DBrownDesigns: it does get confusing, do I talk about the team or talk about etsy
liskidder: And I can't read what they're saying :(
sarawearsskirts: lis, try switching it to have a column of text on the left?
sarawearsskirts: it's easier to read?
liskidder: Ooooo I'm dumb. Thank you!
sarawearsskirts: it's okay!
stellaloella: lis, you can switch to text view
SweetyPrize: column on left is easier
stellaloella: :)
PaperScissorsArt: so what do we do that is different from a traditional team, marketing wise?
sarawearsskirts: here's the workshop cheat sheet, for those who aren't totally familiar: http://team.etsy.com/workshop-cheat-sheet.html
sarawearsskirts: well, many etsy street teams have blogs, their own websites, etc.
AshleyJacobsen joined the room
GlassCat: bounce
PaperScissorsArt: yes
PaperScissorsArt: and that is part of marketing
sarawearsskirts: this is different than a traditional street team set up, where everything would just link back to the band, not one facet of the band
DBrownDesigns: EJA and Indiana does
SweetyPrize: i think we do things that can be a little more complex than the traditional 'flyer like crazy' history of street teams
sarawearsskirts: but i think this is great - how teams are promoting one tiny bit of etsy
sarawearsskirts: it makes you all very important appendages to the bigger Etsy
willowglass: EGA has their own website and blog too
sarawearsskirts: because you can all be doing things that we can't
sarawearsskirts: locally and within little niches online
andymathis left the room
stellaloella: definitely.
sarawearsskirts: right - most active teams have at least one off-etsy presence right now
sarawearsskirts: be it a blog, a google or yahoo or flickr group, a photo pool, a website.
PaperScissorsArt: does everyone understand what street-teams did vs. what we are doing?
sarawearsskirts: it's fantastic, because it's all that many more ways for people to stumble across etsy
DBrownDesigns: It seems as some members are into the offsite places, and I think others would prefer it within etsy. Really looking forward to that!
sarawearsskirts: good question, paperscissorsart.
PaperScissorsArt: not that I am disagreeing with the idea of online street-teams
PaperScissorsArt: I just think that we aren't "teams" in the traditional sense, and maybe we need to take a look at that
sarawearsskirts: we're working on incorporating it into etsy, but for the time being, i'm looking at the bright side of having it off-site. :)
sarawearsskirts: paperscissorsart, precisely.
PaperScissorsArt: how do we incorporate it into our goals?
sarawearsskirts: we need to look at how we can step back and learn from traditional street teams.
sarawearsskirts: and how we can improve upon them
sarawearsskirts: as Etsy teams
PaperScissorsArt: street teams were all about plastering the area the band was going to play in
PaperScissorsArt: making hand made flyers and passing them out at school
sarawearsskirts: which might not be totally practical or effective for etsy.com
PaperScissorsArt: handing out demo cassettes to everyone
ZestyB: or it might
sarawearsskirts: but we can figure out what aspect of that might be effectivew
sarawearsskirts: *effective
PaperScissorsArt: but while those things might not be practical for etsy
smashing joined the room
PaperScissorsArt: could the same ideology be effective?
sarawearsskirts: exactly.,
stellaloella: the concepts we borrow from traditional street teams are the grassroots and word of mouth style promoting
sarawearsskirts: what can we take away from that?
virtuallori: the core is sharing the passion for something
liskidder: The same ideology?
sarawearsskirts: being genuine and promoting the big idea
DBrownDesigns: I think local street team write ups in online newpapers is great for traffic
PaperScissorsArt: and doing it indie style
sarawearsskirts: the big idea being "buy handmade" of course.
sarawearsskirts: right, ending mass production, having handmade holidays, etc
PaperScissorsArt: street teams made such an impression because of how they marketed the band
ZestyB: We're doing a stitch n bitch at eh open market
PaperScissorsArt: and what they got out of it in the end
virtuallori: we may not pass out cassettes, but we can pass out promos for our teammates and Etsy in general at our shows
stellaloella: when we represent Etsy at craft shows, one thing that seems to resonate with people is when we talk about the mission of Etsy and the handmade lifestyle, rather than just trying to sell merchandise
sarawearsskirts: the very core of what etsy's about is very perfect for grassroots style, make your own flyers / business cards campaigning.
SweetyPrize: i think those tracks you made are neat
ZestyB: 2 tents, comfy area & some promos, business cards, lemonade
virtuallori: We talk up Etsy and what it's all about
SweetyPrize: that resemble the street preacher zines
virtuallori: to those who haven't heard of it
sarawearsskirts: word of mouth is by far the most powerful marketing anyone could ever want
PaperScissorsArt: anyone have a "street team" only booth at the events they attend?
ZestyB: yes
DBrownDesigns: How about online, how do you promote your team online, other than a blog and site?
SweetyPrize: i would definitely pass out a gazillion of those
virtuallori: DBrown, it's about being visible online
sarawearsskirts: that's a great question, dbrown
virtuallori: commenting on blogs
ZestyB: I think the tought thing about the mission - is that not everyone shares the precepts...
DBrownDesigns: online is where it is at, clickable you know..
smashing: having the support of people with a similar craft or location also strengthens my personal bond with etsy-not that etsy is a cult ;)
sarawearsskirts: maybe if you have an avatar on other sites, having Etsy as a part of it
sarawearsskirts: including it in the signature of your email if you can
virtuallori: getting your name and shop out there
sarawearsskirts: little things that make Etsy more visible
GeminiMoonMosaics: etsy mini on personal sites and blogs
GlassCat: Every customer of mine at a craft show, hears about etsy
DBrownDesigns: I do try to inlcude a link to my team in addition to my personal store
virtuallori: shop address on business cards and show promos
stellaloella: in talking to sellers who have successfully used their personal blogs to market their Etsy shop, one of the things they always talk about is building relationships with other bloggers
sarawearsskirts: swapping links to your blog with other bloggers (especially if you know non-etsy bloggers)
sarawearsskirts: exactly, stella
stellaloella: go to other blogs and make useful, interesting comments
ZestyB: ...sara...thoes are personal things
stellaloella: so people click back to your site from the comment you left, because they'reinterested in you
virtuallori: getting involved with local bloggers (like brewedfreshdaily.com in Cleveland)
sarawearsskirts: but they're things everyone can do, and they're free, essentially
DBrownDesigns: does all the blogging really work? What is the next level?
sarawearsskirts: when you have actual, enjoyable, readable content that is not just ads, blogging totally works.
liskidder: Writing an opinion piece for a local paper is probably the next level
Hoolyghans: I think some people definately have created enough buzz w/ their blogs
sarawearsskirts: but don't expect it to work if you only talk about what you're selling.
virtuallori: exactly, Sara
sarawearsskirts: that's like those informercials that come on at 3am
Hoolyghans: look at Black Apple and Shim & Sons
sarawearsskirts: ashleyG has a great blog. so does stilettoheights.
stellaloella: yep, people read blogs because they want to learn something -- either about a person or a topic.
DBrownDesigns: yes, not all about you...
DBrownDesigns: 2 of my teams are working on free PR
sarawearsskirts: so a team's blog should not be all about what the team is selling, but about what the team is DOING
HiAnnie joined the room
SweetyPrize: i think if you post some of the ways anyone can promote etsy in the teams section, that would be good
sarawearsskirts: if you do a charity event, together as a team, that's interesting.
sarawearsskirts: to individuals, and to a newspaper, perhaps.
PaperScissorsArt: i think it is a good idea for teams to have identifiable goals and a plan
virtuallori: great idea, Sara!
sarawearsskirts: it's about having content
willowglass: EGA's blog has included reviews of other Etsy shops as well as having an Ask the Artist section, both of which help to cast the net a little farther.
sarawearsskirts: doing things that are worthy of talking about
sarawearsskirts: and that's how Etsy teams are different than street teams
liskidder: I started working on the team resources page on etsywiki - it has some links to ways to promote Etsy http://etsywiki.com/index.php?title=Etsy_Teams_Resources_and_How-To%27s
liskidder: that I think Matt put together
stellaloella: that looks great, Lis! thank you! :)
smashing: cleveland's team blog has offers for skill shares-i love that-people off etsy are interested too :)
shoozles joined the room
smashing left the room
sarawearsskirts: fantastic!
PaperScissorsArt: can you share the link smashing?
virtuallori: http://clevlandrocksetsy.blogspot.com
virtuallori: Smashing disappeared. :-(
smashing: http://clevelandrocksetsy.blogspot.com
sarawearsskirts: oop, right. there it is
sarawearsskirts: excellent
smashing: where am i??? :)
virtuallori: Don't know, babe
DBrownDesigns: so how do you identify the effectiveness of your promoting? Do you know it is working?
smashing: freeky :)
sarawearsskirts: maybe try clicking a square to take a seat?
sarawearsskirts: anyway, there are a couple ways to measure that, i think
groovyglassgirl joined the room
sarawearsskirts: good question, dbrown
Shutterkate: i'd assume team sale increases would be a decnet indicator
DBrownDesigns: but we don't know where the sales come from
sarawearsskirts: if you have an off-etsy blog, you can tell by a hit counter, so that's a little info
Shutterkate: true
sarawearsskirts: (but you don't know how many people actually read vs. clicked through)
groovyglassgirl: Hello!
sarawearsskirts: but ideally, you might notice sales are more consistent
PaperScissorsArt: you can ask them
sarawearsskirts: although i'd caution against expecting it to increase sales directly.
PaperScissorsArt: where'd you hear about me
Shutterkate: but if sale increases co-incide with increased team marketing you could assume that's the cause
Shutterkate: at least in part
stellaloella: i know some of the successful sellers I've spoken with have a definite relationship between the number/frequency of sales and the amount of promoting and listing they do
PaperScissorsArt: but some marketing works better than others
sarawearsskirts: in my note from seller, i used to offer to refund shipping if people emailed me to say how they found me
smashing: ((i have to disappear on purpose this time-thanks for the roundtable!!))
DBrownDesigns: interesting, sara, I will have to think on that.
willowglass: That's a good incentive, Sara
smashing left the room
DBrownDesigns: I feel like I am bothering the buyer though...
sarawearsskirts: right - your sales stats can be affected by a lot more than just blogging, but blogging really can't hurt it (unless you write horrible terrible things in your blog, whihc would be silly, of course)
sarawearsskirts: if it's just in the note to buyer, they can ignore it (and many do)
shoozles: yes it would!
DBrownDesigns: most of mine ignore it, especially new buyers
sarawearsskirts: anyway. have we gotten too off on a tangent (yep, the note to buyer is oft overlooked)
HiAnnie left the room
sarawearsskirts: ?
sarawearsskirts: what else can we learn from general, traditional street teams?
PaperScissorsArt: plastering
Alteredevents left the room
stellaloella: so, high volume promotions?
SweetyPrize: that you need a giant mass of people to simply go 'do'
Alteredevents joined the room
sarawearsskirts: that's the spirit of it - doing things as a group that you can't accomplish alone
PaperScissorsArt: or that you need to get your name out there a million times in a million ways before people will notice you
sarawearsskirts: we covered that you can do an event that will be more interestnig as a group
sarawearsskirts: like picking a day and making it 'buy from etsy not from big boxes' day
sarawearsskirts: and really promote it
sarawearsskirts: and making it newsworthy
stellaloella: this is interesting, because in prior round tables, we discussed how to engage more members of a team -- having a small task that everyone can help with would accomplish that -- like flyering or commenting on blogs and linking back to the team or Etsy, etc
sarawearsskirts: that sort of a guerilla, anti-mass-production mentality is street teamy to the core
GeminiMoonMosaics: what if you only have a few people on the team willing to "plaster"
DBrownDesigns: what about a combined street team day? Pick on day for everyone to blast it out there?
PaperScissorsArt: do it anyway
SweetyPrize: dbrown thats a good idea
sarawearsskirts: right - if you only have a couple people on your team, do it up and others will want to join (it's easier to join something that's already rolling)
sarawearsskirts: or join up with another team
stellaloella: the idea behind teams is that every little bit counts -- the sum of the parts is greater than any individual voice
sarawearsskirts: that's the wonderful thing about how many teams - esp. global teams - there are.
DBrownDesigns: so why not sum up all the teams together for a blitz?
virtuallori: right, Stella. Same with all promotion. It all adds up.
stellaloella: that's an interesting idea, DBrown.
sarawearsskirts: i love that idea, dbrown.
PaperScissorsArt: there is a group of women in Portland that do meetups and walk around neighborhoods handing out promos in bags
catrocks left the room
PaperScissorsArt: kinda like avon
sarawearsskirts: i've been thinking of having teams try to partner up, but rallying all the teams together is fantastic
PaperScissorsArt: everyone gets together and stuffs and then walks and hangs bags on doorknobs
sarawearsskirts: the UK just did some awesome knitted graffiti with Etsy tags - so beautiful
DBrownDesigns: in person and online line. A national Etsy Team Day! lol
PaperScissorsArt: I am trying to get my team interested in doing a Xmas float
sarawearsskirts: it's in the flickr group photos here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/teametsy/
ZestyB: international
sarawearsskirts: INTERnational!
sarawearsskirts: yay!
DBrownDesigns: even better!
virtuallori: global Team Etsy day!
sarawearsskirts: totally.
GlassCat left the room
sarawearsskirts: so, what would we tell teams and people to do on global team etsy day?
virtuallori: If they have a blog, do a post
PaperScissorsArt: something crazy
virtuallori: comment on other blogs
PaperScissorsArt: something to get noticed
virtuallori: post flyers at coffeehouses
PaperScissorsArt: wear orange
sarawearsskirts: everyone makes one etsy purchase, and leaves a promo posted somewhere, and takes a photo of their promo?
virtuallori: charity run/walk
shoozles: a sale as well
DBrownDesigns: Pick a day in advance, have them advertise it, some might so sales, post flyers locally
PaperScissorsArt: have an event
PaperScissorsArt: do a bake sale
sarawearsskirts: it would have to be advertised in advance - all the etsy bloggers could write about it
DBrownDesigns: online promotion, and how about team treasury lists rotating on the front page?
sarawearsskirts: (there are hundreds of etsy bloggers)
PaperScissorsArt: something to conjure up a conversation and for people to ask and be interested
virtuallori: donate a portion of proceeds to chariry
stellaloella: I'm reminded of the "Day in the Life of Flickr" that just happened this summer.
virtuallori: *charity
GlassCat joined the room
sarawearsskirts: yeah, stella, that's what i was thinking
GlassCat left the room
sarawearsskirts: i love the idea of everyone doing some creative graffiti (non-harmful, removable, not vandalizing)
Shutterkate: what happened for "day in the life of flickr"?
sarawearsskirts: and taking a photo to post
sarawearsskirts: so it would be of-notice on flickr
PaperScissorsArt: scavenger hunt
DBrownDesigns: Would be great to do a blitz in early November for holiday sales!
Shutterkate: neat
PaperScissorsArt: invite the public
Ramona joined the room
virtuallori: love the Flickr tie-in
sarawearsskirts: stella, want to explain day in the life?
sarawearsskirts: flickr is just such a highly visual site, i think it's so perfectly suited for etsy
stellaloella: actually, it was called "24 hours of Flickr", now that i looked for it
sarawearsskirts: and etsy activities
stellaloella: basically, flickr asked everyone to document what they did for a single day, and post it on their flcikr page -- then add it to a group
chickadeebeads: DBrown~great idea on front page exposure! might get more sellers to join teams as well as buyers to look
stellaloella: so it was a giant global photo diary for the flickr community for one day
virtuallori: The Flickr people seem like cool people; might be worth exploring an official tie-in for that day
DBrownDesigns: a contest for bringing in new buyers and sellers?
sarawearsskirts: if we can get the majority of teams and team members to participate, we can blog about it on the etsy blog, have team treasuries on the front page and other great things.
virtuallori: Love it.
sarawearsskirts: but we need great participation in adnvance - organization
stellaloella: http://www.flickr.com/groups/24flickr/
DBrownDesigns: Global Team Etsy Day! Love it!
Ramona: Hello!
PaperScissorsArt left the room
sarawearsskirts: (we'll have to have a workshop dedicated just to planning this in more detail)
virtuallori: Hey, Ramona!
Ramona: Hi Lori sorry i'm late hey everyone
SweetyPrize: it could become a national holiday
SweetyPrize: handmade day
sarawearsskirts: the best thing about this whole global team etsy day is that it shouldn't cost people money to participate. which is true to grassroots style marketing.
Shutterkate: sounds very cool
virtuallori: with parades!
stellaloella: we'll need to talk to the Etsy Marketing team to discuss how to accomplsh this, and maybe what resources Etsy can help with (graphics for fliers, blog banners, etc)
sarawearsskirts: right
sarawearsskirts: i'm thinking maybe a day in october or november
liskidder: Very cool
sarawearsskirts: closer to holiday shopping?
virtuallori: November
ZestyB: Tuesday after Thanksgiving?
DBrownDesigns: Late October or Early November!
willowglass: November sounds good
sarawearsskirts: well, the monday after thanksgiving is the #1 day for online sales
sarawearsskirts: highest online sales of the year
stellaloella: While it's good to be excited, remember that we're just talking about an IDEA right now -- this is not a finalized 100% going to happen event. (but we hope so!)
virtuallori: Not a Saturday. Too many of us are doing shows on Saturdays in November & December
DBrownDesigns: cyber monday, ahhh
sarawearsskirts: right, cyber monday.
sarawearsskirts: if we're going to do this at any scale, we will need lots of participation
liskidder: Just a quick thought - we all might be insane then because we'll be handling holiday orders
sarawearsskirts: and your wonderful ideas.
shoozles: I don't remember that being good sales on line
willowglass: I agree Lis, earlier in November might be better
DBrownDesigns: how to get the teams all fired up and what everyone is doing will be huge!
liskidder: (and also I have to run to a meeting but I will read the transcript - thanks guys!)
ZestyB: bring it back to your 5!
ZestyB: I'll bring it to my 3
ZestyB: ets
ZestyB: ops
sarawearsskirts: okay, we can talk specifics at a later date - i'll be sure we dedicate a workshop to organizing thing.
sarawearsskirts: *this, not thing
DBrownDesigns: I think they will be more inclined to participate if they can see the benefit, like front page!! lol
Shutterkate: very cool
willowglass: Yup, Deb, instant gratification!
shoozles: blitz would be front page news LOL
sarawearsskirts: but this is really mostly about getting new faces to etsy
Shutterkate left the room
sarawearsskirts: so we will need to consider ways to get the name ETSY out there that day
Shutterkate joined the room
sarawearsskirts: so the front page is great, but we need to focus on marketing outside of etsy.
artsyphartsy: if everone reads the transcript of this workshop and prepares ideas in advance for the next workshop to plan the event it would be helpful
