sarawearsskirts: so, for tonight, i have a special announcement. we'll be announcing it in the next day or so in the storque and places,
sarawearsskirts: but we have a special guest tonight - wonderamy!
sarawearsskirts: wonderamy is a new admin, she'll be helping me manage all the etsy teams
wonderamy: hi everyone!
sarawearsskirts: so i thought for this workshop, we could do a Q+A.
wonderamy: yay! i am so excited to work with you all on making the etsy teams stronger and stronger.
sarawearsskirts: you all can ask us questions, and amy (and i) can ask you questions
sarawearsskirts: to write a questions, type /ask then your question
wonderamy: and of course, so delighted to be working with the lovely and talented sarawearsskirts!
sarawearsskirts: yay!
AnneDundas joined the room
sarawearsskirts: wonderamy is supergreat, so i'm happy to have a partner in crime for working on team stuff
sarawearsskirts: since teams has grown tremendously since the beginning of summer
yummybodycandy asks, wonderamy what brings you to Etsy?
wonderamy: I am also interested to hear, in general, anything and everything you think a new Teams admin should know as she learns the ropes. You can say it here, or convo me.

sarawearsskirts: by the way/
sheilasthings: How can the teams effectively promote themselves?
sarawearsskirts: and fuzzy, alo
sarawearsskirts: *also
wonderamy: WHat brings me to Etsy: I am a seller - my seller name is wondercabinet. I've been selling here since March. I fell so in love with ETsy I basically walked into the Etsy Labs and forced Etsy to hire me! I also knew sarawearsskirts from the Philly Etsy Street Team and we have been scheming...

wonderamy: Sheila, there are so many ways teams can promote themselves. Lots of good ideas on the etsy wiki, for starters...have you seen it?
sarawearsskirts: http://www.etsywiki.com
Messaging enabled.
sarawearsskirts: you all are awfully quiet tonight. questions?
abitabite: like trunkt shows
siansburys: sorry its past my bedtime
GerrysJewelBox left the room
liskidder: I have a question. EGA has been looking into buying advertising.
sarawearsskirts: okay, what kind of advertising
liskidder: Magazine advertising - like a group ad buy where people would opt in
sarawearsskirts: yep
liskidder: and pay ~$300 or something each
montezumamudd asks, Is it possible to have team dedicated, password protected chat rooms that never expire.
liskidder: I know Matt said that Etsy would kick in $$ for advertising on a case by case basis
liskidder: Is this the kind of case he was talking about (generally - I know you can't approve something specific here)
wonderamy: montezuma..
montezumamudd: yes
sarawearsskirts: mostly the policy is that the advertising should be in support of an event, pretty much, bt it is case by case, depending on circumstance and the amount
wonderamy: that sounds like a great idea for the new community section which is being worked on...
Bombus left the room
montezumamudd: Great!
sarawearsskirts: we're mostly talking about, for example, an ad in a weekly newspaper, for example, for a show that maybe 20 sellers are vending at or something
sarawearsskirts: that kind of thing
liskidder: Okay gotcha
AnneDundas left the room
AnneDundas joined the room
sarawearsskirts: montezuma - yes, what amy said about the new community sectionwhich is in th works
KoolKookyKreatures asks, when do the teams get their own areas on Etsy?
montezumamudd: Sounds great! I'll watch for the new community section.
SweetyPrize asks, what are some ideas for street teams to use surrounding holiday shopping season?
sarawearsskirts: we don't have a quantitative ETA yet, but it's high on the priority list
KoolKookyKreatures left the room
debsmuddle left the room
sarawearsskirts: because community is a super important aspect to the site
SweetyPrize: thanks for posting my question
sarawearsskirts: (not a dumb qustion!)
sarawearsskirts: for the holidays, teams can do lots of things.
wonderamy: how about doing some kind of campaigns in your towns/cities that encourage people to buy handmade items for the holiday season, instead of mass-produced gifts?
wonderamy: what are other people's ideas?
sarawearsskirts: they can promote the idea of buying only handmade gifts
wonderamy: we're of the same mind, sara!
sarawearsskirts: totally :)
pamglew: studio sales? home etsy parties?
montezumamudd asks, Home Etsy parties??
sarawearsskirts: maybe do a small charity event with other etsy events and try to get press coverage for it
ArmstrongIndustry: I have a B and M shop and promote buying handmade , would love new artisans
sarawearsskirts: home parties are a great idea
abitabite: on cnn this morning the news reader was saying what will parents do for christmas with mattel thing because not many toys are USA made anymore... and i thought what a perfect op for the toy makers of etsy to barrage the morning crew with here are some safe USA made toys
sarawearsskirts: like tupperware, only all handmade. like a trnk show in your house
liskidder: abitabite that's a great idea
vuelodepapel left the room
sarawearsskirts: abitabite, i thought the same thing while watching the news this morning
wonderamy: wow - i wanna do a home trunk show now!
sarawearsskirts: it's a great opportunity for toy makers and children's makers to band together
abitabite: robin meades stuff is really casual and it seems like they like viewer interaction
sarawearsskirts: is anyone in here on etsykids or etsy moms
abitabite: I am hardly the spokes person for it though haha
wonderamy: i'm all for the slighly more contraversial guerilla actions in shopping malls - like comedy performances on the fly,
pamglew: yep
wonderamy: handing out little cards advocating for people to buy handmade with your team URL /etsy shop on the back,
sarawearsskirts: pamphlets with the pro's of buying handmade and the cons of supporting mass production
ArmstrongIndustry: we are having a round robin painting sessions on the street this weekend
sarawearsskirts: that sounds super fun, armstrong
willowglass: Where are you located, Armstrong?
bethbrown: ooo pamphlets sounds like a good idea
wonderamy: thats great armstrong!
sarawearsskirts: teams are as much about creating and networking as they are about promoting
pamglew: whats round robin?
yummybodycandy: Just try to not come off as crazy as Mary Kay ladies.
SweetyPrize: i wonder if etsy would make a tract that is easy to download
wonderamy: also, everyone should keep in mind that if you have an event where you expect a bunch of people, you can request that we send you promo materials from etsy, and sara and i will send them to you.
sarawearsskirts: right, yummybodycandy - make it more about the ideals of buying and supporting local art as a lifestyle than just buy buy now now
ArmstrongIndustry: Artist paint on one canvas for a while then they all move on to the next painting. So each person gets to add to all paintings.
willowglass: that sounds awesome, Armstrong!
loribeads asks, Is there a national ad campaign in the works to get new buyers to Etsy.
pamglew: ah!
montezumamudd: A round robin with clay would be awesome!!
liskidder: good question
sarawearsskirts: this is where you all come in. currently, there are no plans to do anything like a big TV campaign
sarawearsskirts: but you all, teams, are little arms and legs of etsy, getting press and taking out ads all over
willowglass: any magazine plans, Sara?
sarawearsskirts: spreading word about the site virally.
sarawearsskirts: print ads aren't super effective for web stuff.
sarawearsskirts: click throughs are way more effective
wonderamy: the campaign is YOU...the etsy tams, all over the country and world, who are doing grassroots activities all over, spreading the word about etsy person to person.
pamglew: so its mostly word of mouth- uk are really getting into etsy now
sarawearsskirts: if every seller tells 1 person a week, and we have 50,000 sellers (give or take) right now
sarawearsskirts: think of how powerful that is
abitabite: wear your etsy shirts!
sarawearsskirts: the UK does seem to be picking up, totally.
pamglew: i want one!
liskidder: I wonder if you'll hit all markets with that approach... especially the population segments who have money to buy things
wonderamy: not just word of mouth - there are crafting events happening all over the place now, all the time...and they are always populated by a good number of etsy sellers. many are organized by etsy sellers.
KidzGemz: me too!
liskidder: especially high end things...
loribeads: so it sounds like Etsy mgmt is really against central advertising and prefers to leave it to the stores to handle, is that a correct statement?
sarawearsskirts: we've been working ome other types of shows lately, not just craft shows (specifically indie craft shows) to more effectively spred the word
sarawearsskirts: don't forget we've gotten some high-end press - the new york times, dwell magazine, the philly inquirer, etc.
sarawearsskirts: (and cutoverload twice this week!)
bethbrown: and boing boing, all the time
AnneDundas: If you're targeting craft shows, then wont that bring in more sellers rather than buyers?
wonderamy: I think the ethos of ETSY is that it is grassroots, movement-style activism and business. And that with internet culture, decentralized and widespread marketing is better than going for big ad campaigns
sarawearsskirts: it's a good thing to remember, for teams and in general, that a paid-for ad is usually less interesting than a feature about something in teresting in a blog or magazine
liskidder: Those all seem like the same population segment to me. Mostly young, mostly liberal leaning....
abitabite: sellers are buyers too
liskidder: sometimes
sarawearsskirts: the philly inquirer, i assure you, is not young OR left leaning
sarawearsskirts: :)
bethbrown: at craft shows, you are targeting the people who come to the show to shop, as much as the other sellers
sarawearsskirts: we want buyers, for sure
wonderamy: yeah...while advertising may not be a huge priority for etsy, getting press IS for SURE.
pamglew: sending press releases are free! going for local press features usually works if you send great photos 300 dpi
ArmstrongIndustry: Promotion is much better than paid advertisement
abitabite: people are more likely to read an article than an ad... unless itis a very good ad
wonderamy: Thats something that is always being pursued by the folks at ETsy headquarters - the Labs - as well as by many of the street teams. come up with events that are unusual and interesting and invite the local press.
wonderamy: the DIY and crafting movements are hot in the media right now, and we can all take advantage of it.
liskidder: It would be great if we could find a way to attact the older male/female gift buying crowd and established professionals etc who probably don't visit boing boing
sarawearsskirts: word of mouth is very, very super powerful. tell your dentist, your doctor, leave cards at your hair salon.
pamglew: also local radio is good & usually happy to fill air time
liskidder: maybe we could do press kits for those types of magazines/outlets
yummybodycandy: Yes, the Charlotte Observer is doing a piece on Etsy this week
sarawearsskirts: that kind of thing gets the word out to other population segments.
KidzGemz: a press kit would be nice to have access to.
abitabite: a lot of my buyers are older gift buying types
abitabite: i dont think it is an etsy wide issue
abitabite: that there is a lack of these peopel
loribeads: kidlets (see my avatar) are BIG with the grandma crowd. :)
wonderamy: liskidder, there are actually lots and lots of sellers on etsy who are not in the boingboing demographic - and many are on street teams. our philly etsy street team is really diverse in age and approach.
sarawearsskirts: the philly team talked about this issue at our last meeting - how to attract people in the area with money
liskidder: Neither do I. I'm not saying that there's a lack of those people - I'm saying that targetting craft shows isn't going to bring in MORE of those people.
SweetyPrize: we made a standard press release for our team
SweetyPrize: in it we left blank spots for the shop to tell the local press more about themselves
AnneDundas: You'd need a more 'upmarket' style press kit to send to the higher end mags etc, so it looks more 'professional and established'
SweetyPrize: the final step is helping the shop get the release to the right media people
SweetyPrize: but i feel this is something easy a team could do
wonderamy: targeting craft shows is not a major component of our strategy - it is just one of many approaches.
sarawearsskirts: professional looking kits are key. etsy always keeps in mind its intended audience when sending kits and press releases, of corse.
liskidder: That's a great way of doing it SweetyPrize
SweetyPrize: but maybe its my journalism background showing
wonderamy: i see what you are saying liskidder
liskidder: Would Etsy help teams put something like that together? I don't know how to do that...
pamglew: an online etsy mission statement would be great
loribeads: I love the idea of a press kit where I can sort of 'fill in the blanks' and send it into the local media
liskidder: I don't know what goes into something like that
sarawearsskirts: yes, now that amy is aboard, she and i will be putting together kits on making press kits
SweetyPrize: i would gladly help anyone who needs it
sarawearsskirts: we want to give you all the resources you need to do that
wonderamy: wheeee.i like doing stuff like that.
liskidder: Awesome
abitabite: I have the etsy mission statement on a 'kerchief
sarawearsskirts: sweetyprize, we'll convo you about that - what a nice offer!
loribeads: that would be greatly appreciated!!!! Awesome!
willowglass: Thanks, SweetyPrize. EGA will be calling on you :)
wonderamy: and we can use all of your best ideas about it too. remember, in the meantime, use the forums and your team meetings to come up with great ideas for it.
SweetyPrize: just bake me some cookies or something
loribeads: San Jose magazine, here we come!
sarawearsskirts: the teams section of the site is going to become a great tool now that amy and i are working together, even before the new community section is up
wonderamy: yes. its a bit clunky now but we'll keep adding really good resources to it while we wait for the overhaul, which is going to ROCK.
SweetyPrize: i feel that writing letters to the editor is also easy
wonderamy: definitely!
SweetyPrize: especially if you write on a timely topic, if the paper just wrote an article about mass production you could respond
abitabite: or to cnn ;)
pamglew: yes short punchy letters!
abitabite asks, what is the turn around on promo material right now? I know before sara started it was sometimes over a month
sarawearsskirts: :)
sarawearsskirts: amy and i are commandeering this now
SweetyPrize: my team, etsy trashion, is good for that because our concept has a bit of activism associated with it/behind it
wonderamy: good news on that, abitabite...
KidzGemz left the room
yummybodycandy: yes we've still not received ours
wonderamy: we are just starting to take over being in charge of sending promo materials to teams...and we will work with mondo efficiency. which doesnt mean you shouldn't give us plenty of notice!
AnneDundas: Will you send promo materials internationally?
AnneDundas: I'm in Australia
sarawearsskirts: if you've sent a request form in the past two weeks or so and haven't gotten a pack yet, email me at sara@etsy.com with promopack in the subject
sarawearsskirts: we will send internationally, yes
SweetyPrize: what are the promo materials?
yummybodycandy: ok
sarawearsskirts: they vary, but they're always awesome
sarawearsskirts: we have lipbalms, bandanas, stickers
sarawearsskirts: bumperstickers
sarawearsskirts: posters
abitabite: the lipbalms are TASTY
sarawearsskirts: postcards... lots of great stuff
pamglew: wow cool
sarawearsskirts: the honey and grapefruit lip balms are to die tfor
loribeads: mmmmm
abitabite: I love the coconut one
siansburys: doh i wish i'd known about those before last weekend, lol
sarawearsskirts: but yeah, you can send me an email if you still have an event, and sent a form and need stuff to me sara@etsy.
sarawearsskirts: otherwise you can fill out the form at http://team.etsy.com
slavko joined the room
SweetyPrize asks, can street team make their own items that say etsy on them?
wonderamy left the room
loribeads: Oooh good question
SweetyPrize: i no speak with good english
sarawearsskirts: sure! make stencils! use the downloadables at http://team.etsy.com!
wonderamy joined the room
sarawearsskirts: make banners for shows!
wonderamy: whoops...i'm back
SweetyPrize: can we sell them to our members?
loribeads: slippery chairs
SweetyPrize: or the world at large
sarawearsskirts: no, don't sell them
sarawearsskirts: don't profit from the etsy name.
SweetyPrize: like a tee shirt?
sarawearsskirts: use them as promos - free things to advertise and give away
SweetyPrize: oh ok
liskidder: What if we sell them at cost? (don't profit)
sarawearsskirts: get creative about it though!
sarawearsskirts: no, promos are really intended to be free
sarawearsskirts: it's a fine line / slipper slope.
GlassCat: I see shops selling Etsy items
sarawearsskirts: we'll be publishing do's and don't s for this kind of thing very soon
abitabite: thats a sarahsays subject
sarawearsskirts: lawyer saraH is working on this with us
SweetyPrize: what if its not a promo, something like an i love etsy trashion tee shirt
sarawearsskirts: i'm not a lawyer, so i
SweetyPrize: too specific i know
pamglew: I'm not currently in the UK Street Team- how do i join?
sarawearsskirts: , im going to refrain from answering more on this for now, but know more info is coming
slavko left the room
sarawearsskirts: were working with lawyer saraH on it very hard
wonderamy: it was a good question sweetieprize! iwe'd like to know for sure too!
liskidder: What about business cards?
sarawearsskirts: no it's a very good qestion.
sarawearsskirts: business cards are GREAT
SweetyPrize: its a tough question
sarawearsskirts: (just don't, you know, sell them)
siansburys: pamglew: http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5158577
liskidder: So we'd want to order them in bulk... because we'd get a better deal on them
wonderamy: ha! selling your own business cards..
sarawearsskirts: definitely put your shop name on things - promote the heck out of yourself and your team
liskidder: One person would have to order them and then get reimbursed by the other people
pamglew: aha great thanks for the link!
siansburys: yw :)
liskidder: this isn't "selling" them is it?
SweetyPrize: we try to have fundraisers and then allow that money to cover the promo item's cost
abitabite: i like lollibombs new cards they say "proud member of etsy green and clean" ... something for team members to consider putting on thier cards
loribeads: I think that is something that could be paid for with the member dues
sarawearsskirts: no, splitting the cost of cards among your team is not selling them
abitabite: or clean and green whichever way around that goes haah
sarawearsskirts: it's splitting the cost - that's okay, it's like sharing the cost of a website for your team if that's something you're into
sarawearsskirts: abita, that's awesome about lollibomb's cards!
willowglass asks, Are you seeking promotional materials from teams to add to press kits?
abitabite: its a good idea too sara
liskidder: good question
almapottery joined the room
liskidder: that's a cool idea :)
abitabite: if i had my coveted mature street team i'd but it on my cards
sarawearsskirts: good question. i can ask the labs about this. they might be looking for specific things for certiain target receiptients
wonderamy: we may, when we get to that point.
sarawearsskirts: *recipients
sarawearsskirts: (this keyboard is killing me)
sheilasthings asks, Is it possible to add an interactive section where people can vote on "challenges" that we are hosting on our teams?
wonderamy: i think team materials would be awesome in press kits. for example, etsy clean and green could have promo materials in a kit we send to environmental themed rags.
abitabite: oohhh that would be cool... i love it when the uk team does challenges
sarawearsskirts: the new community section will be as interactive as the rest of the site
loribeads: Neat!
siansburys: challenges are great :D
sarawearsskirts: so it will be easier for teams to do these kinds of things, challenges and contests
sheilasthings: So, could it have a voting capability?
wonderamy: do you mean voting, like how we can do polls in the workshops?
sarawearsskirts: i LOVE seeing teams do challenges and trivia and other things.
sarawearsskirts: it's awesome
liskidder: Sara will the press kits kit be something that comes out in time for us to use it pre-holidays (no pressure - I'm just wondering)?
sarawearsskirts: i dont know if it will have voting, but teams will have way better ways of keeping in touch and promoting themselve
wonderamy: I think we can do something at least basic in the next month or so. SOmething more advanced may take longer.
sarawearsskirts: yes, liskidder - we want to give you those resources ASAP so you can promote re-holidays
sheilasthings: It sure would be nice :}
liskidder: Awesome thank you
sarawearsskirts: resources are TOP for amy and i to work on these days
wonderamy: yes!
almapottery left the room
GlassCat: Thats great
sarawearsskirts: amy, do you have any questions for these team members?
sarawearsskirts: :)
siansburys: hurry up tho i have to go sleep
wonderamy: :) way to put me on the spot!
wonderamy: thinking...thinking...
AnneDundas: So can we get an idea of what's actually coming up, say the next few months? Specifically for teams
wonderamy: I know: teamsters: WHat should I be asking you?
wonderamy: hee
sarawearsskirts: ps. everyone - i love seeing you all each week - these workshops are really a valuable tool for me, i look forward to them weekly.
willowglass: good question, Anne.
sarawearsskirts: no pressure! :)
siansburys: yeah can you make them any earlier? lol
sarawearsskirts: anyone have questions for amy?
sarawearsskirts: yep - we change the time each weel
sarawearsskirts: *week
