QuincyPearson joined the room
wonderamy: We will be taming with other comanies and organizations to create something called....drumroll....
wonderamy: TEAMING with other companies, I mean...
wonderamy: called....
wonderamy: drumroll.....

wonderamy: The Handmade Pledge!
wonderamy: A big campaign to organize tons of people to sign a pledge saying that they will attempt to buy all handmade gifts this holiday season.
sarawearsskirts: yep, we're going to enlist the help of all you lovely team members and leaders to help us promote the handmade pledge.
sarawearsskirts: the focus is on emphasixzing how handmade makes better gifts.,
nutnutgoods joined the room
wonderamy: The handmade pledge will have its own web site, and partners outside of Etsy, to make it really big.
willowglass joined the room
wonderamy: It is going to be announced next week, so there is some info we can't tell you before then.
sarawearsskirts: it will have links back to places people can buy handmade... like etsy!
wonderamy: and the best part is, in promoting yourselves and your teams, you will be promoting the handmade pledge and etsy, all at the same time.
sarawearsskirts: so, we have the questions open, so if you'd like to ask a question, type /ask the your question
jascamille joined the room
sarawearsskirts: basically we're soliciting your ideas on this as well as giving you all some of our ideas to think about how we can all do this
emie joined the room
wonderamy: sara and I are in charge of thinking about how the Teams can be a major grassroots activism force behind the pledge - and how the Pledge can help Teams flourish in the Holiday season.
girlsavage joined the room
girlsavage left the room
wonderamy: SO we want to know from you - after we have answered some of your questions - how you think this can be successful, how your teams might want to be involved, basically - what YOu would do if You were AMY AND SARA, to organize teams around this!
ldobbin joined the room
abbey753 joined the room
sarawearsskirts: we want thousands and thousands of people to sign this pledge, saying they will buy handmade this holiday season
redpanda asks, what other websites besides etsy will be participating?
sarawearsskirts: to ask a question, type /ask
reform joined the room
wonderamy: we can't tell you yet, until the announcement is publicly made next week!
wonderamy: sorry!
sarawearsskirts: (sorry, but they're awesome)
wonderamy: (the drawbacks of being the forst to know...you can't know everything yet!)
nancygamon asks, Will there be t-shirts?
reverendross joined the room
charlottenarunsky joined the room
wonderamy: there will be a LOT of promotional materials to support this, and we'll be sending promos to all the Teams participating.
wonderamy: not sure if T-shirts are part of it, or iron-on decals, etc.
wonderamy: its all still in development, but its happening fast.
sarawearsskirts: we can make stencils so you can make tshirts.
andymathis left the room
wonderamy: it would be great to hear your ideas about what promos you think would work well, when we open the floor.
SweetyPrize asks, do they physically sign the pledge? is there something neat surrounding that?
wonderamy: it will be an online signup
TwistedThicket left the room
chichiboulie joined the room
lupin joined the room
reverendross left the room
sarawearsskirts: you get to sign an online pledge, and leave a link (like to your shop or your blog or where ever)
wonderamy: but the idea is to find all kinds of creative ways, through guerilla marketing and otherwise, to entice people to sign it.
nancygamon asks, What motivation do people have to sign the pledge?
sarawearsskirts: they get the satisfaction of knowing they're supporting individual artists,
sarawearsskirts: but also we're expecting a lot of artists and makers will also sign, so they can link back to where they sell their wares.
sarawearsskirts: that's what we're hoping, hoolygans
wonderamy: its a way for tons of artists and crafters to join togher as a bigger movement to get people to turn away from mass production during the holiday season, and embrace us leetle handmakers
montezumamudd asks, Can we tell our team members or do we wait until next week when the announcement comes out?
sarawearsskirts: we're going to open the floor in a few moments to get your ideas.
sarawearsskirts: let's go through some more questions quickly first.
wonderamy: you can start telling yuour teams, because we didnt want to keep teams waiting..
wonderamy: because we know you are all getting geared up to make holiday plans,
art4milkbones joined the room
Foxgloves joined the room
sarawearsskirts: this is going to be very, very big, so we wanted to tell you so you can all plan on helping promote it

emie left the room

Enygma left the room
sarawearsskirts: and you all have been submitting great content so far
Kae1Crafts asks, what tags should we use in our blogs to link to this push?

sarawearsskirts: you can use terms like craftivisim, etsy, buyhandmade
sarawearsskirts: handmadeholidays

wonderamy: there are so many good questions
SweetyPrize asks, what is the goal?
heloise joined the room
sarawearsskirts: the goal is to encourage people to choose handmade over mass produced gifts
sarawearsskirts: and drive tons and tons of traffic to etsy.com
sarawearsskirts: (quite simply put)
heloise left the room
askey joined the room
wonderamy: in partnering with other sites and companies, we make the reach of this thing much bigger, and get a lot more press.
wonderamy: A good combo of increasing sales, and doing good in the world!
ArtyAllsorts asks, is this going to be an International campaign?
sarawearsskirts: yes, for sure.
sarawearsskirts: most definitely.
sarawearsskirts: handmade = worldwide.
Shutterkate left the room
wonderamy: as much as it can be. etsy is working hard to become more and more international (i.e. accessible to folks outside the U.S.)
MayaBella asks, can anyone sign. non etsy shops people?
zerkahloostrah left the room
sarawearsskirts: yes, that's a major goal of this campaign - to attract buyers.
sarawearsskirts: while attracting other artists is fantastic, for the holidays we want to focus on buying handmade.
sarawearsskirts: so we want *everyone* to sign
wonderamy: we want to reach beyond our current base of buyers and sellers to anyone and everyone who is interested in handmade.
sarawearsskirts: your dad, your neighbor, your boss, your sister
Enygma asks, how long will the campaign run?
wonderamy: from next week until the end of december, we will be pushing it hard. after that, I'm not sure yet what it will morph into.
Urbanknit asks, in general how will this be promoted other than the energy of the teams?
wonderamy: The energy of the Teams is one facet pf the promoting. A second is the Etsy marketing Team -
ldobbin left the room
wonderamy: who will be working on getting a ton of press, and partnerships with other web sites and companies and orgs ,
wonderamy: and we'll partner with them for marketing and publicity too.
wonderamy: so, the Teams are the grassroots part, and Etsy marketing (and partner's marketing) are the more corporate counterpart.
lovealittle left the room
wonderamy: (even though I hate the word corporate...thats what it is)
PoPkO asks, what exactly should we relay to our teams. spell it out pour moi.
gerrijo joined the room
gerrijo joined the room
wonderamy: Anything we have said here in this workshop, can be relayed to others...
sarawearsskirts: you can relay that we're on the verge of announcing a major marketing campaign for the holidays
sarawearsskirts: encouraging people to buy handmade gifts and things this season
Kezzaroo asks, How do you plan on focusing on external buyers, or want us to help focus on buyers, instead of the pledge just being signed by the majority of etsy sellers themselves versus less potential buyers?
sarawearsskirts: this is where we need your creatvity and help us really branch out and hit a broader market
sarawearsskirts: lots of people who don't otherwise shop DO shop during the holiday season
sarawearsskirts: so we have more of a chance of getting more people who might not know about etsy and the handmade movement already
jmday left the room
sarawearsskirts: this is where we need to take to the street (literally and theoretically) to push it out there
wonderamy: many teams are already planning holiday sales, trunk shows, events, etc meant to entice new potential buyers - this campaign can become a part of that, it can enhance what those projects are already doing...we want this to be another way teams can do what they already do best - reach out to wider ba
sarawearsskirts: this is one unified message that all teams can promote while promoting themselves.
imakecutestuff joined the room
gerrijo left the room
gerrijo left the room
wonderamy: right - so individual teams can do what they already do, but also be a part of a larger movement, which will help in both directions!
redpanda asks, I participate in "buy nothing christmas" where you make/recycle all your gifts instead of buying at mass merchandisers. Is there any way you could implement the people that support this as well?
sarawearsskirts: i love the idea of all recycled / buy nothing christmas
sarawearsskirts: however, sometimes i just can't make everything i want to for gifts...
sarawearsskirts: etsy is a palatable solution 0
sarawearsskirts: you can find recycled, handmade stuff here
sarawearsskirts: you can even shop locally with the geolocator
sarawearsskirts: so i think this doesn't stray too far from that philosophy
wonderamy: also, remember a lot of suppliers are on etsy...its better to buy your crafting supplies on etsy than at walmart!
sarawearsskirts: totally true
jmday joined the room
sarawearsskirts: handmade supplies rock
wonderamy: if you are making your own gifts!
lupin asks, might it be possible for the Etsy labs to make/sell rubber stamps with a pledge related slogan for us to stamp our packages etc with when we send out orders?
montezumamudd asks, When will we receive the promos for this campaign?
Hoolyghans asks, will there be cool html buttons to put on blogs
wonderamy: all these questions are about promos...
wonderamy: we will be making a ton of promos, and we plan to send them out around the end of this month or first week of novemeber
AileeneGuzman joined the room
wonderamy: we will have a lot of dreat downloadable stuff
sarawearsskirts: *dreat = great
wonderamy: for blogs, web sites, etc...in a bunch of sizes for multiple applications.
chichiboulie left the room
sarawearsskirts: we're aiming to have this be a very viral campaign, so we're going to give you all the tools we can to help do that
wonderamy: all of this will be available through the web site for the pledge, which will be seperate from etsy, (but there will be links to it from etsy)
fingersfray joined the room
MayaBella asks, what is guerilla marketing?
wonderamy: big question mayabella
sarawearsskirts: guerilla marketing relies on methods of spreading your word that aren't traditional paid advertisements
sarawearsskirts: in a nutshell
sarawearsskirts: (i'll post a link to old transcripts from workshop sessions where we discuss this and name ideas
Hoolyghans asks, can you give us a hint of what type of partner companies even if you can't name names?
wonderamy: nope...sorry!
wonderamy: next week you will find out!
Kala left the room
nancygamon asks, Do the pledge signatures (and links) appear in the order people sign?
wonderamy: I'm not sure about that yet Nancy
sarawearsskirts: transcripts: http://team.etsy.com/workshopschedule.html
wonderamy: its all in high-speed development as we speak!
sarawearsskirts: (amy and i aren't building the pledge, haven't totally seen it yet, so we're unsure of exact details on some things)
SweetyPrize asks, can i have some money?
wonderamy: no!
sarawearsskirts: yes. here is some money.
willowglass asks, Will these promos be sent out to team leaders to distribute?
wonderamy: yes
AileeneGuzman left the room
sarawearsskirts: which is why we've been collecting team leader email addresses (thanks for bumping that thread everyone)
sarawearsskirts: we're creating ways to be in touch with team leaders more closely for this campaign
SweetyPrize asks, do you have a timeline?
sarawearsskirts: of course!
sarawearsskirts: (the timeline does not have a specific day for giving anyone money though)
PresenceofColor left the room
wonderamy: Next week, the campaign launches. Sara and I are working out a detailed timeline of when everything will happen, including daily and weekly resources for teams.
wonderamy: The Storque will be a major point of info for you guys.
sarawearsskirts: yes! read the storque as habit!
wonderamy: and we just work our tails off until Christmas, basically. But a detailed timeline will be made available as we work it out.
sarawearsskirts: you can sort the storque by content tags that we include when we write articles, so search for Etsy Teams
SweetyPrize asks, do you have celebrity endorsements?
CircaCeramics asks, Love the idea of a stamp to eek out the ebay logo on labels
wonderamy: whoops
sarawearsskirts: are amy and i not big enough celebrities for you all?
sarawearsskirts: yes, a stamp would be awesome, we'll work on that, maybe it will be for sale in the etsy labs shop
sarawearsskirts: okay, we've gone through a majority of the questions, so we're going to open the floor up for marketing ideas (please stay on topic!)
Messaging enabled.
ColdCell: boo
wonderamy: what do you think?
Bombus joined the room
virtuallori: love it!
MayaBella: I cant wait to start

Hoolyghans: I think it's awesome!! Just please please please keep us up to date if it gets delayed
siansburys: it would be better if we had tshirts
SweetyPrize: it will definitely fit in trashion's plans
MayaBella: i will totally buy a stamP!
reform: can you make allowance for promo stuff getting overseas in time
TiasTreasures: Ya - the sooner you send promo's the better!
lupin: yay at the idea of stamps! I thought it would be ace to have a re-usable promo item, something we could stamp on packaging, correspondance, all kinds of things
abbey753: yes we have many global shops
wonderamy: glad to hear so many of you think that it will fit in well with your plans...
TiasTreasures: Alot of people are doing lots of shows - starting now....
nancygamon: With or without the pledge, I like the "Buy Handmade" movement. That's easy to get behind.
reform: thats where the downloads will be V. important
willowglass: show season is in full swing now
wonderamy: we'll send out the non-U.S. promos first for sure
virtuallori: must. have. downloads.
SweetyPrize: i got to go, i'll be reading the transcript

lupin: okay cool sara :)
MayaBella: good idea
willowglass: good idea, lupin
wonderamy: we'll be keeping in touch with all of your team leaders through an email list, and we are working on making an opt-in email list for all team members too which we will start next week (dont email us with your address - we will have forms on the ETsy site for you to join up with that

TIGGERBONN: thanks, guess I need to be chipped with an alarm !
wonderamy: think together with your teams about how you think this can work, and come to subsequent workshops with your ideas.
Hoolyghans: very excellent workshop, will be waiting with baited breath for further details
imakecutestuff: sara: we have a lot of team members that aren't on the official etsy seattle team page...do they have to be?
wonderamy: Please don't start threads in the forums about this until it is announced next week.
MayaBella: Sweet..
KristieLynn joined the room
wonderamy: VERY IMPORTANT...jst so we can stay on top of sharing the information ourselves, and not let speculations run amok in the forums,
MayaBella: what Hoolyghans said
TIGGERBONN left the room
sarawearsskirts: we want to make sure information is clear, not confusing and cohesive
montezumamudd: Can we discuss this in our team thread?
wonderamy: yes...just dont start new threads about it.
montezumamudd: great.
strawberryanarchy: i want to make a kawaii street team but i don't know how and even if i did would it be too late?
nancygamon: How can we share this information with our teams in a way that will ensure they don't take it to the forums?
art4milkbones left the room
TiasTreasures: Tell them not to :)
wonderamy: just ask them not to. nobody will be punished if it happens, we just dont want it to explode
lupin: what is the date for the announcement?
nancygamon: Ask nicely and smile.
wonderamy: before we are ready. use the info with the intent of thinking and brainstorming with your team, not with the intent of beginning to promote the idea
