HeyMichelle: they are great! lots of useful info in there if you haven't seen them...
sarawearsskirts: we've been doing a lot of work for teams lately here at etsy, and gearing up for the holidays
How many of you were in the workshop last week?
BindingTwine joined the room
Hoolyghans joined the room
TheVintageKitchen joined the room
1 yay, sarawearsskirts: okay, we'll this will be new news to most of you
sarawearsskirts: which is great!
sarawearsskirts: in the workshops last week we talked about how we here at Etsy are currentlyspearheading a massive initiative to encourage people to buy handmadegifts this holiday season.
sarawearsskirts: We have built a website called:
sarawearsskirts: (drumroll:)
sarawearsskirts: http://www.buyhandmade.org
sarawearsskirts: where people will be able to take this simple pledge:
sarawearsskirts: I pledge to BUY HANDMADE this holiday season, and request that others dothe same for me.
sarawearsskirts: More than mere marketing campaign, we view this as a call to action forconsumers to be conscious of how they spend their money and, wheneverpossible, to support independent creators.
greygoat joined the room
HeyMichelle: Amen to that!
sarawearsskirts: (minutes / transcript from this workshop will be available at http://team.etsy.com in a couple days, in case you miss parts of it)
dbabcock joined the room
sarawearsskirts: We’ve gathered together animpressive gang of partners to do this with us, to collectively work topromote the site and foster a movement. The pooling of resources betweenEtsy and our partners will create a huge buzz on the internet –collectively we represent a huge population of crafters, designers,a
sarawearsskirts: artists and hand-makers…and our audiences and buyers. The Etsymarketing Team is working with the partners on a huge press campaign.
BindingTwine left the room
sarawearsskirts: Our partners are :Craftster, Indiepublic, Craft Magazine, Design*Sponge, The American CraftCouncil, BurdaStyle, and the Austin Craft Mafia!
BindingTwine joined the room
sarawearsskirts: hello! take a seat by clicking a square
DinnerTimeChimes joined the room
sarawearsskirts: to fill in those who are just joining us, we're talking about the new handmade holidays campaign here at etsy
sarawearsskirts: a website called http://www.buyhandmade.org
sarawearsskirts: Of course, this is a TREMENDOUS marketing and promotional opportunity forEtsy sellers and Etsy Teams! In fact, Etsy Teams are the most powerfulgrass-roots engine for spreading the word about anything Etsy, especiallythis kind of thing.
daniellexo left the room
sarawearsskirts: As each of you takes the pledge on the buyhandmade.org web site, you alsoleave your Etsy shop URL, which is great for your visibility, asgizillions of people will be visiting the site.
sarawearsskirts: We are hoping that the Etsy Teams will drive massive amounts of traffic tothe handmade pledge site, which will drive massive amounts of traffic toEtsy.com, which will be great for all of us.
sarawearsskirts: We are also hoping that this will give you, the Teams, a great way tofocus your Holiday season plans and activities – a way which will connectyou to a much bigger movement, with much bigger press opportunities.
sarawearsskirts: that's what we'll be discussing today - ways to make this work
sarawearsskirts: what specifically local teams can do to spread the word where they are
sarawearsskirts: Forexample, if you do a local or web-based event and you want to send out apress release about it, talking about the handmade pledge will give yourstory a bigger spin that the news outlets might find extra interesting
sarawearsskirts: we'll be posting guides for etsy teams on things like how to write a press release, etc
sarawearsskirts: to make your teams successful in this
BindingTwine left the room
sarawearsskirts: buyhandmade.org will launch this week
sarawearsskirts: so we're giving teams a head up on this, so we can all brainstorm together
sarawearsskirts: on ways to make this successful
sarawearsskirts: Just think – if 150 Etsy Teams have an average 50 members each, that’sapproximately 7,500 people.
sarawearsskirts: If 7,500 people each send 20 people to signthe pledge,
sarawearsskirts: that’s 150,000 people total signing to the pledge.
sarawearsskirts: 150,000people visiting buyhandmade.com and promising to resist the spectacle ofmass-production, and to purchase gifts from artists and crafters instead
sarawearsskirts: sooooo
Kreativlink joined the room
sarawearsskirts: on that note, i'm going to encourage you all to ask questions now by typing /ask then your question
staceyrebecca asks, is this a secret website?
sarawearsskirts: nope - it's just not totally launched yet, but it will be by the end of the week
valutree asks, will we have a downloadable PDF thing so we can print out the pledge and post it at our booths as local craft fairs this season?
sarawearsskirts: yes!
sarawearsskirts: very much yes!
sarawearsskirts: we're working on all sorts of downloads and promos -
sarawearsskirts: so you can post things on your websites and blogs
sarawearsskirts: and print things out yourselves
sarawearsskirts: and also we're mailing each and every etsy team a package of promos for the holidays
dmriceart joined the room
HeyMichelle: oooh, great
chichiboulie joined the room
sarawearsskirts: we *definitely* want to spread this virally as much as we can, and we know downloads are useful for that
TheVintageKitchen asks, What if you are apart of a team, but not necessarily handmade I'm on of the many vintage sellers
sarawearsskirts: that's a-okay!
sarawearsskirts: we're encouraging people to think about where they're doing their holiday shopping
sarawearsskirts: buying vintage is still not buying mass-produced, really
LindaLindaLinda joined the room
sarawearsskirts: we want to enoucrage people to buy from etsy, really
HeyMichelle: I think of a vintage etsy shop as a "handmade boutique"- finding the goods and bringing them together into a good shop is a skill, for sure!
CircaCeramics asks, would it be pc to add it to our exit message after a sale? The link? The pledge?
ArtMind joined the room
sarawearsskirts: oh sure! you can add it everywhere!
LindaLindaLinda left the room
HeyMichelle: great idea, circa
sarawearsskirts: i'm working on a calendar now of ways you can easily market everyday - add it to email signatures, your myspace page, etc etc
sarawearsskirts: all over!
sarawearsskirts: i love that idea!
dmriceart left the room
squidglass asks, what is the pledge like? Is it something we can print out and hand out?
sarawearsskirts: it's an online thing - you sign it online, and leave a link, like to your etsy shop
sarawearsskirts: so you want to enoucrage people to go online to sign, with the idea they'll click over to buy something when they do
Hoolyghans asks, for reals? My team was on the edge of their seat last week
sarawearsskirts: yep, it took a little longer than we thought to work out some kinks -
greygoat left the room
sarawearsskirts: we didn't want to send the masses to an imperfect site.
BeadJewelryShopgirl joined the room
sarawearsskirts: this week is no joke, though! (and we do appreciate your patience with it, if you were looking for it last week)
daniellebags joined the room
TheVintageKitchen asks, If there is a way to include vintage in this (although) I know it's handmade.org, I'd love to make the vintage sellers fell apart and get them involved with Vintage Indie
BeadJewelryShopgirl left the room
HeyMichelle: are you a part of a vintage street team, TheVintageKitchen?
sarawearsskirts: vintage will also benefit from more shoppers being directed to etsy, and vintage sellers should focus on the aspect of encouraging people to not shop for mass produced stuff -
sarawearsskirts: vintage people should play up the one-of-a-kind type angle
staceyrebecca asks, by when can we expect these so called "promos" ;)
stopsandstarts joined the room
sarawearsskirts: no later than nov. 15. if you're a team leader and signed up for the team leader email list, you'll be getting more info tomorrow
quiltnut60 asks, what do we have to do to be a team leader or to participate?
daniellebags left the room
sarawearsskirts: if you find yourself organzing a team, just send an email to teams@etsy.com with your etsy username, and your team name, and i'll include you in the team leaders list
valutree asks, where will you be advertising about this? Is it just on the sponsor pages or are thene some print adds and adds on podcasts and things?
sarawearsskirts: we're working on drumming up as much press on this as possible. that's matt's job
greygoat joined the room
sarawearsskirts: we'll also be getting literally tens of thousands of promos to get to you all to distribute
BeadJewelryShopgirl joined the room
BeadJewelryShopgirl left the room
virtuallori joined the room
BeadJewelryShopgirl joined the room
sarawearsskirts: i mentioned a bit earlier, for those just getting here, that every etsy team will be receiving promotional goodies for this campaign
FireChickTick joined the room
sarawearsskirts: team leaders will get more info on this tomorrow
sarawearsskirts: to type a question, type /ask and then your question
greygoat asks, what about a nice shiny forwardable email?
sarawearsskirts: yep, we can provide things for you to forward on. there will be a whole page of resources
sarawearsskirts: at http://team.etsy.com - resources just for teams and sellers who want to help promote this
HeyMichelle: oooh, interesting about the email...good easy one!
sarawearsskirts: we want to make it as easy as possible for you all to spread the word
sarawearsskirts: the email is a fantastic idea!
valutree asks, I know we don't usually have links on our pages but how about a link in our shop anouncement or a button that says we have signed it?
sarawearsskirts: that's a good idea, too.
sarawearsskirts: thee probably won't ever be clickable links in your etsy shop...
sarawearsskirts: but you should write out that you proudly signed and encourage your customers to do the same!
sarawearsskirts: i also loved circaceramic's idea of including it in the message to buyers when you have a sale
sarawearsskirts: very, very nice
sarawearsskirts: and it you keep a mailing list from your shop, by all means include this info in that, too!
squidglass asks, are we encouraged to contact our local papers about this? I think they'd like a local face or group to tie into the article.
sarawearsskirts: yes!
sarawearsskirts: oh, yes! please do, this is great!
sarawearsskirts: we're going to post, by the end of the month,
sarawearsskirts: resources for teams, like how to write a press release
sarawearsskirts: so you'll know how to go about doing those things
sarawearsskirts: if you're unsure
sarawearsskirts: we feel like this campaign gives some meat to an article on your shop, locally
sarawearsskirts: it shows your shop as part of a larger movement
sarawearsskirts: the handmade movement
sarawearsskirts: Together, all of the members ofEtsy’s Teams comprise what can only be considered a vibrant internationalmovement of artists and crafters.
sarawearsskirts: this is a great angle for a press article
Kreativlink asks, what about for example our European Team. We can't distribute materials very easily ...
sarawearsskirts: oh,but you can!
sarawearsskirts: teams like europe and canada, in my opinion, have an advantage.
sarawearsskirts: you can cover more ground.
sarawearsskirts: for example, the philly team, we all overlap each other because we live so close
sarawearsskirts: you all live in a town, and can distribute things within your town
sarawearsskirts: you just need to come up with ways to get things to all your members, which we can discuss in this meeting
sarawearsskirts: i'll open the floor in a couple minutes, so we can discuss things as a group
staceyrebecca asks, what about a graphic for our 5th picture?
chichiboulie left the room
sarawearsskirts: great idea! and mention it in your item descriptions, too, if you think of it!
sarawearsskirts: we'll have grpahics on the teams resources page, with the downloads.
sarawearsskirts: or you can include a screenshot you take yourself
MrPS asks, so will we get some code or something like a logo we can put in our blogs too?
MrPS left the room
sarawearsskirts: yep! for sure!
sarawearsskirts: be sure to check http://team.etsy.com often - think of it as your new headquarters for everything having to do with marketing.
sarawearsskirts: and the storque, too
sarawearsskirts: those two places will be great resources for all of you
tanisalexis left the room
does your team have any events planned for nov/dec?
tanisalexis joined the room
greygoat left the room
5 yay, 6 nay, 9 abstain
sarawearsskirts: awesome. well, we want to encourage you all to plan something, even something minor, to get the word out
sarawearsskirts: i'm going to open the floor so we can brainstorm on that
sarawearsskirts: please stay on topic
Messaging enabled.
quiltnut60: thanks sara
sarawearsskirts: (okay, floor is open - what are ideas for events and things that we can tell the press about to makret all this?
virtuallori: sorry; missed the beginning. what are we gettingthe word out on?
TheVintageKitchen: As a member of the Etsy Bloggers team a possible Blog Carnival
sarawearsskirts: we're getting the word out about a site called http://www.buyhandmade.org
sarawearsskirts: which enoucrages people to buy handmade for the holidays
dbabcock: In early November, the Etsy Mud Team has an ornament challenge planned.
sarawearsskirts: and will have a bazillion links to etsy where they can do said buying
TheVintageKitchen: Where we Blog about the site, its a never ending ring of promotion all discussing the site, and posting our pledge
quiltnut60: TVK, there will be a script of this meeting for you to read in a few days, isn't that correct Sara?
TheVintageKitchen: Huh?
staceyrebecca: Burrito Collective has quite a few events coming up & we can't wait to have materials
sarawearsskirts: yes, i'll post a transcript of this, asap (and there will be one of the global teams meeting, as well)
BeadJewelryShopgirl left the room
staceyrebecca: Ok sadly i need to get going, i have to actually work while I"m at work
staceyrebecca: (go figure)
quiltnut60: oh stacey :(
staceyrebecca: :P i know...
squidglass: The CGGE has lots of challenges among the members, but I'm not sure how we can work the buy handmade message into a challenge...
quiltnut60: thanks for joining us
staceyrebecca: Hey, i'll tell everyone I work with to buy handmade
staceyrebecca: ;)
quiltnut60: yes!
staceyrebecca: handmade challenge sounds awesome.
staceyrebecca: like a candybar sale
staceyrebecca: except its for buying handmade
quiltnut60: mmmm chocolate
staceyrebecca: ok bye!
staceyrebecca left the room
sarawearsskirts: my idea for the philly team (which you all should borrow)
quiltnut60: bye S
CircaCeramics: bye!
sarawearsskirts: was to team up with a local gallery/boutique
sarawearsskirts: the philly team will be buying craft paper and ribbon in bulk
Kreativlink left the room
dbabcock: Gotta go. Dentist appointment. I'll look for the transcript.
sarawearsskirts: and offering gift wrap for $1 on the handmade item they just bought
sarawearsskirts: if they agree to sign the pledge right there
dbabcock left the room
TheVintageKitchen: You mentioned a button for a blog, this would be good for a carnival too.
valutree: for the seattle team there is a huge show coming up the first week of december called the urban craft uprising. I'm going to incourage everyone there to sign. I"ll contact the lady who organizes it.
CircaCeramics: dang sara! laptop?
valutree: it fact I"m going to a indie craft party this weekend and I"ll pass out flyers there
sarawearsskirts: yes! valutree, you'll also have promos for your team then
MangoTango joined the room
sarawearsskirts: laptop! and the boutque has a computer
dkpottery joined the room
sarawearsskirts: definitely don't underestimate word of mouth - tell your dentist, your salon, your mechanic, your coworkers...
quiltnut60: wom is very powerful
sarawearsskirts: we want this to spread to people who don't even know to read blogs on crafting yet, too, you know?
quiltnut60: talk your lips off about it
FireChickTick: are there flyers available? ( I snuck in kinda late )
sarawearsskirts: ask your local coffeehouse if you can set up a table on a weekday morning, or ask them to give out postcards for it
sarawearsskirts: that's okay, FTC
sarawearsskirts: yes, promos will be mailed to each and every team
TheVintageKitchen: Someone asked me what Indie was yesterday, The word really needs to get out
valutree: postcards are great
FireChickTick: :: shame ::
sarawearsskirts: the team leaders will be getting info on how to get theirs this week
FireChickTick: ok awesome. I'm doing several shows this season...I'll pass 'em out
sarawearsskirts: vintagekitchen - good point
valutree: Could even print flyers and post them on telephone polls around town
MangoTango left the room
sarawearsskirts: we need to not only preach to the indie-loving choir, but tell people who might just assume the mall is their only option
sarawearsskirts: stencils! and chalk!
FireChickTick: put them in halloween treat bags. :D
TheVintageKitchen: Idea: The library often hosts craft nights, family nights, beading, quilting. Maybe you could be a guest speaker at one of those fun events
dkpottery left the room
sarawearsskirts: valutree, the secret is making sure things are posted where people will see and remember them.
sarawearsskirts: like by computers and things
sarawearsskirts: vintage kitchen, i LOVE that idea
squidglass: treat bags - cool idea!
TheVintageKitchen: thanks
sarawearsskirts: think about where people are accessing the internet - coffeehouses, libraries, offices...
tanisalexis: treat baaaaagggsss!! yea!!
quiltnut60: these are all good ideas
squidglass: We could have guerilla teams papering the cars at the mall with fliers... (joke)
tanisalexis: sugar free
sarawearsskirts: yes, very good ideas!
sarawearsskirts: ha
sarawearsskirts: all the promo packages will come with a list of good ideas on how to use the promos, actually
FireChickTick: I have a herd of kids. I'll send them to the teachers / teachers' lounge in school.
MAugustaWoodland: The flyers should have little tear-off pieces of paper with the website on them.
quiltnut60: do the promos come with chocolate? jk sorry, off topic
TheVintageKitchen: We have a local Mic night, where they giveaway drink hats shirts, all sorts of items. A very indie outlet for musicians, you could give out items there. Possibly include your card and one of your handmade items as a prize
sarawearsskirts: since you're all local-organized teams, we should focus on local ways to get the word out
Hoolyghans left the room
sarawearsskirts: if your kid's school has a pta /craft fair, think about asking to get a table to tell people about etsy
sarawearsskirts: good idea, vintagekitchen
HeyMichelle: good idea TVK...also if you are donating an item to a charity auction, you can include this info too- great idea
DinnerTimeChimes left the room
sarawearsskirts: i think the key to success of local events is plugging into things that are already happening and being a part of it
MrPS joined the room
sarawearsskirts: like church craft fairs, school craft fairs, craft nights at libraries, coffeehouses, boutqiues
TheVintageKitchen: My experience with grab bags, or promo bags at an event aren't that great. rather than including material in a bag full of other material I think it's better to personally hand them out.
sarawearsskirts: don't be afraid to approach businesses you think would be all about supporting local artists
sarawearsskirts: and framing it as a way to curb needless mass production
CircaCeramics: we found that to be the best way - hand promo bags out to customers (paying!)
sarawearsskirts: really intrigue people when you hand things out - tell them about the range of things on etsy
TheVintageKitchen: Agrreed Sara and more eco friendly too.
sarawearsskirts: about how it's all about helping people make a living making things
sarawearsskirts: right
stopsandstarts left the room
sarawearsskirts: these talking points and other ideas will all be incorporated into the guides that we'll post at http://team.etsy.com
MrPS left the room
sarawearsskirts: does anyone have any more questions for the discussion?
TheVintageKitchen: Have you ever been in a dentist chair laying back for an hour and you are staring at the ceiling? We have ads at our dentist do you know how one of those images burn in your head. Ha ha ..
sarawearsskirts: ha! nice point!
squidglass: If we print them out, use funky recycled paper
sarawearsskirts: see if your doctor or dentist would tell people about etsy or buyhandmade during the day!
sarawearsskirts: recycled materials are awesome.
sarawearsskirts: the medium is the message - we can set ourselves apart by showing we think about how we do this stuff
quiltnut60: I have to get going.... I will definitely request more info on this
sarawearsskirts: we don't just leave things under car windshield wipers, etc
HeyMichelle: a ha! you are full of easy/sneaky/brilliant marketing strategies, VintageKitchen
HeyMichelle: thanks for coming, quiltnut60
TheVintageKitchen: Thanks ha ha..
CircaCeramics: bye quiltnut!
quiltnut60: yw! just trying to learn how to exit the room LOL
quiltnut60 left the room
sarawearsskirts: how about ideas for teams that cover BIG areas of the globe, like canada and florida and europe?
tanisalexis: :)
CircaCeramics: chicago's having a meeting this sat., so we'll discuss this then...
sarawearsskirts: do you think you can all reasonably divvy up the promos we send you to hand them out all over?
sarawearsskirts: great, circa!
sarawearsskirts: is that asking you all to do too much work?
MAugustaWoodland: I'm pretty good at divvying.
sarawearsskirts: it makes me excited to know it's covering more ground, so to speak
tanisalexis: Yes- please! both myself and tomate- me, west -tomate, East
CircaCeramics: I need to talk to magicjelly...divvying is doable :)
sarawearsskirts: tanis, when i ask the team leaders to send their addresses, i'll include info on what BIG teams and global teams should do...
HeyMichelle: this is great, everyone! very excited to pitch in & do my part!
virtuallori: no problem divvying here; we're frequently social
tanisalexis: ANd then The Vancouver folks
sarawearsskirts: excellent!
TheVintageKitchen: I write a popular blog with a very large subscriber list. You may do this to, you could add this button or a blurb about it at the end of a send out.
tanisalexis: thank you sara- you are wonderful. ;)
sarawearsskirts: i guess global teams and large geographic teams should consider what their 'hot spots' are?
ArtMind left the room
sarawearsskirts: oh, thank YOU! you all are so wonderful, teams have so much good stuff going on!
tanisalexis: change your email signatures to include the website link and a small blurb
sarawearsskirts: it's almost hard to keep up with, but it's great!
sarawearsskirts: yes!
sarawearsskirts: most importantly, check http://team.etsy.com and the storque ALL THE TIME
sarawearsskirts: for updates and ways to market
sarawearsskirts: we'll be providing soooooooo many ways to do it
TheVintageKitchen: I LOVE storque it's in my GoogleReader!
sarawearsskirts: nice!
valutree left the room
sarawearsskirts: well, i guess since we're approaching an hour, we'll wrap it up
sarawearsskirts: you all are awesome!
tanisalexis: nah...you are. lol
sarawearsskirts: i can't wait to hear what great things you all do to get the word out!
squidglass: thanks! bye
TheVintageKitchen: Thank you for a nice workshop, I loved it and it's an awesome feature.
CircaCeramics: yay!
sarawearsskirts: oh, you're very welcome! it's all jared's wizardry, i think it's so useful
virtuallori: thanks, sara & amy, for all you do.
tanisalexis: cant wait- a line up at the site to get in and see i bet. ;) haha
TheVintageKitchen: Businesses are missing out!
squidglass left the room
sarawearsskirts: (ha, i love the hearts throwing feature)
CircaCeramics: heh - ok bye :)
virtuallori left the room
sarawearsskirts: okay, well, see you all next week! the workshop schedule is available at http://team.etsy.com now
