TIGGERBONN joined the room

virtuallori: Sara, you're upside-down. ???
sarawearsskirts: tiggerbonn, we're saying where we are and what time it is

TIGGERBONN: Hello! Sorry I'm late. Virginia here
sarawearsskirts: take a seat by clicking a square
wonderamy: (click on a square to take your seats)
TIGGERBONN: 11 always late, so back of the class for me !
sarawearsskirts: we'll wait a moment or two to let people get in here before we start
virtuallori: my aim is off -- lack of practice
willowglass: So, what was everyone's temperature this morning? 29 degrees here in NY on the VT border - brrrr!
wonderamy: you guys aren't late. really...other people will be later!
abbey753 joined the room
wonderamy: wow willow - thats cold!
willowglass: Hi Lou!
abbey753: goodmorning
MAugustaWoodland: I think it's in the 50s here? Maybe the 60s.
abbey753: hi willow
Antiquebasketlady: 52 degrees in west bend wis
virtuallori: haven't bothered to open the door, but I put on my scarf from petitelibellule in the house.
wonderamy: Its 54 degrees in Philadelphia PA
virtuallori: computer says it's 48 now
willowglass: frost on the pumpkins!
sarawearsskirts: oh my, willowglass! that's chilly!
sarawearsskirts: i'm wearing my mmmfiber scarflet this morning
sarawearsskirts: because it's pretty
willowglass: haha, Sara, it wakes you up REAL fast when you put the dogs out
sarawearsskirts: and warm
abbey753: we have been so lucky no snow
sarawearsskirts: lou, where are you again?
wonderamy: (I'm going to go bump the forum thread - BRB)
willowglass: You're in PA, right, Lou?
abbey753: Weatherly pa
sarawearsskirts: i just ducked into the red room to let them konw
thebeadkeeper: Hello! Someone was at the door, but I am officially here now.
willowglass: I'm 14 miles from the Bennington, VT border. Beautiful, but cold
sarawearsskirts: is that northeast pa?
abbey753: between 15 min from Jim thourpe
abbey753: yes pa
abbey753: yes
abbey753: 2 hr from philly
sarawearsskirts: ah, okay
abbey753: 1 hr 45 from new york
willowglass: I *think* I'm about 300 miles from Philly
wonderamy: beadkeeper, click on a square to take a seat
abbey753: Willow we should meet sometime
sarawearsskirts: it took amy and i a whopping 5 hours to get to nyc on friday!
willowglass: I'd love that, Lou!
abbey753: traffic can be bad
virtuallori: way cool, how the gifts expand now instead of having to click through to find what you want!!!
Please vote: have you signed the pledge at buyhandmade.org yet?
wonderamy: (we went to NYC for the Portland Etsy Team Trunk Show)
abbey753: too cool
Vote results: 7 yay, 0 nay, 2 abstain
sarawearsskirts: the pdx'ers were so great!
wonderamy: yay buy handmade!
abbey753: yes i hate you not having trunk shows next year
wonderamy: i know...its sad.
abbey753: etsy 's not having
sarawearsskirts: if amy and i were in brooklyn and at the labs, we'd push for more trunk shows...
sarawearsskirts: but we're in philly
sarawearsskirts: so it's hard to organize from down here
wonderamy: but honestly, its going to free up some more time to do stuff that effects more people around the world
sarawearsskirts: true true
wonderamy: more online stuff
abbey753: we could always do philly
sarawearsskirts: i like getting to meet all the teams that have shows - that's been fun
sarawearsskirts: at my house, lou? :)
abbey753: sounds cool
sarawearsskirts: i volunteer amy's house
abbey753: philly a great city too
sarawearsskirts: alright, shall we get started?
wonderamy: (my house would be great for a trunk show)
wonderamy: yes!
willowglass: yes, please, kilns are on!
sarawearsskirts: alright, today we'd like to discuss the handmade pledge and ways to direct people to it
smashing joined the room
sarawearsskirts: so, first we'd like to start with your general questions
sarawearsskirts: if you have a question about the pledge or holiday marketing, type /ask then the question
PresenceofColor joined the room
sarawearsskirts: and we'll go through the queue
heloise joined the room
sarawearsskirts: it's /ask before the question
wonderamy: we also have some new ideas about marketing and promotions for the holidays and teams which we can discuss after general Q&A
heloise left the room
Antiquebasketlady: I don't have any questions I am just here to learn mo9re
sarawearsskirts: yep, after some general questions, we'll share our ideas on how to best use those badges and things from the www.buyhandmade.org site
sarawearsskirts: excellent
smashing asks, are any teams planning to do a big box detox event? :)
sarawearsskirts: good question!
wonderamy: not that we know of yet. but we home some will!
ColdCell joined the room
wonderamy: *hope, i mean!
Urbanknit joined the room
abbey753 asks, ideas to cover mail cost for teams to send out promos to members
sarawearsskirts: this is a good question, too.
wonderamy: hey new people, we are taking general questions about the holidays, the handmade pledge, etc.
thebeadkeeper: Is there a way to put the "logo" on our etsy homepage?
willowglass: good question, Lou
sarawearsskirts: we'll be mailing promos to team leaders, and we're hoping
thebeadkeeper: for the pledge?
ColdCell left the room
wonderamy: yes
sarawearsskirts: that teams can creatively figure out the best way to distribute these
ColdCell joined the room
sarawearsskirts: yep, pledge promos
sarawearsskirts: i think for global teams
sarawearsskirts: or other teams that are really spread out
sarawearsskirts: it doesn't make sense for every single member to get a bunch of promos
sarawearsskirts: which is why we have the online promo things, as well, for people to use
wonderamy: so people can download and print thier own promos.
sarawearsskirts: the teams should strategize which members are in the best locations
sarawearsskirts: for handing out the physical promos we send
PresenceofColor left the room
sarawearsskirts: you might want to take into consideration what geographic teams are nearby to all the members of global teams
sarawearsskirts: and pick places to distribute promos to that aren't covered by a team already.
sarawearsskirts: we'll make a list of zip codes that we send things to
wonderamy: yes. also, for really big global teams, we can send promos to more than one contact person - say, one packet for every 20 or so people on the team
sarawearsskirts: so people can see where around the country and the world that promos have been sent
sarawearsskirts: right - some of the larger teams have sent three or four addresses, which is great.
sarawearsskirts: in terms of money for postage costs
papamash joined the room
willowglass: that's a great idea. EGA has asked for volunteers in different geographical places to distribute the promos
papamash left the room
sarawearsskirts: maybe teams can pool together a little money in a paypal account to the people who will be the point people
Urbanknit left the room
sarawearsskirts: like everyone on the team donate $2.50 or some nominal amount
sarawearsskirts: to help offset this cost
wonderamy: the promos are going to be pretty simple, so they won't be incredibly heavy.
sarawearsskirts: does this make sense to people who are receiving promos on behalf of larger teams?
sarawearsskirts: we don't want this to be a huge burden on anyone
sarawearsskirts: which is why i don't recommend mailing them to *every* team member
thebeadkeeper: which "promos" are we discussing? I just joined TN teams which has been inactive and we are making active. Need more detail on the "promo"
sarawearsskirts: perhaps you have a few members who do a couple really big successful shows around the holidays
sarawearsskirts: beadkeeper, if you have a leader send me their mailing address (email teams@etsy) then amy and i
wonderamy: sara and i are almost done producing two new guides: making the most of your online promos, and making the most of your printed promos. these will hopefully help you all to use the promos as effectively as possible. they will be posted on tea.etsy.com and the storque, and sent out with promo packs
sarawearsskirts: will mail a bundle of promotional items for buyhandmade to your team
thebeadkeeper: ok
sarawearsskirts: also, it's really important for every team to pick someone to be the 'leader' (or, as i say, superstar)
wonderamy: beadkeeper, we are talking about things like postcards, stickers, flyers etc about the buy handmade pledge, which you can distribute with any of your own team promos
sarawearsskirts: and that person will be included on my mailing list for team superstars
thebeadkeeper: cool
willowglass: thanks
Eskimimi joined the room
sarawearsskirts: so the team will be in the loop with stuff
ColdCell: MIMI!!
sarawearsskirts: it makes it easy for us to communicate with all the teams that way
virtuallori asks, when are the promos coming out? Three of my four holiday shows are in the next two weeks...
sarawearsskirts: awesome
sarawearsskirts: we'll be mailing them within the next 3-5 days,
sarawearsskirts: we're waiting for the promos to arrive at the labs
Eskimimi: Hello - just popping by on the way out to see gran who has baked cake - thought I'd share cake with everyone here
sarawearsskirts: yay
wonderamy: they are arriving in the etsy labs this week, and sara and I plan to go up there and send them out as soon as they arrive, which could be as soon as tomorrow or as late as early next week.
sarawearsskirts: okay, so for those just joining, we're talking about promoting buyhandmade.org
wonderamy: its up to the printing company at this point!
Eskimimi: oh, good stuff, sara
sarawearsskirts: i'd say monday, latest
sarawearsskirts: we will definitely send them out asap
sarawearsskirts: in the meanwhile, make sure your team has had someone send a mailing address to teams@etsy.com -
wonderamy: the second they arrive! I know everybody is itching to get going with the promos.
willowglass asks, What kind of promotional materials will be in the packet?
sarawearsskirts: i have about 40 addresses so far, but i know there are more teams than that
sarawearsskirts: amy?
sarawearsskirts: postcards
wonderamy: we arent sure yet...sara and i helped in the brainstorming process,
sarawearsskirts: likely stickers
wonderamy: but we dont know what final decisions marketing made.
sarawearsskirts: yeah, we didn't get to see the final products, so it'll be a surprise to us, too
sarawearsskirts: to be honest
wonderamy: i am sure they will be awesome though,a nd my guess is that they will be simple and appeal to a wide audience
willowglass: o.k., thanks, just something to bring back to the team later!
Antiquebasketlady left the room
sarawearsskirts: sure, sure
abbey753 asks, jenni thought we could even list promos in the shops recieving the promos for postage only so wanting them to just cover the postage only no cost it sounded like a good idea
sarawearsskirts: that sounds like a good idea, but i'd be sure to list it as reserved for xx team members only
virtuallori asks, could we get some downloadables in the meantime?
willowglass: excellent point, Sara
sarawearsskirts: although i should check with stella and support before i endorse that idea
sarawearsskirts: hey! who tomatoed me?
wonderamy: right now, at www.buyhandmade.org you can download badges for your blogs and web sites and avatars
thebeadkeeper: I love the downloadable idea!
sarawearsskirts: and we'll be constantly updating team.etsy.com to include more resources online
wonderamy: we would like to make postacrds people could print out in the meantime
thebeadkeeper: what about for stickers and postcards?
sarawearsskirts: this week we'll be unveiling a new marketing tool
sarawearsskirts: it's called TEN MINUTE MARKETING
virtuallori: I mean flyers for passing out
wonderamy: but we dont have them yet
sarawearsskirts: it's a calendar of one ten minute thing you can do everyday
sarawearsskirts: starting nov 1
smashing asks, sorry if this is dumb, are there home-printable promos for handmade pledge?
virtuallori: Big private show at a hip software company on Tuesday -- just the crowd for this
sarawearsskirts: to promote your team and your shop
wonderamy: not yet smashing, but keep your eye on team.etsy.com
smashing: thanks! lol! :)
wonderamy: http://team.etsy.com/teamsbuyhandmade.html
sarawearsskirts: we will make big annoucnements in the storque and forums wehn we have stuff available at http://team.etsy.com
thebeadkeeper: great ideas smashing!
sarawearsskirts: very soon!
wonderamy: that is the page where resources for buy handmade will be continually updates in conjunction with the storque.
Eskimimi left the room
willowglass: The EGA team has developed a new site for the holidays for buying handmade to go hand-in-hand with Buy Handmade pledge. It's http://glassgiftguide.com which has the handmade pledge icon on it.
wonderamy: http://team.etsy.com/teamsbuyhandmade.html again, because its important!
sarawearsskirts: oh nice!
wonderamy: its fantastic, glass. and a great model for other teams.
sarawearsskirts: okay, so we were hoping to share ideas on how to use the graphics currently available at buyhandmade.org in the meantime
sarawearsskirts: for example, you can Make your avatar the pledge graphic for a week - on Etsy, Craftster, change it to your primary Myspace or Facebook photo any other online site you participate in.
sarawearsskirts: (like thebeadkeeper has done in here!)
wonderamy: you can include the badge graphic in your etsy shop banner too
sarawearsskirts: imagine if a thousand etsy sellers made their avs the buyhandmade logo for a week
sarawearsskirts: quite an impact
sarawearsskirts left the room
sarawearsskirts joined the room
wonderamy: whoops...where did you go sara?
wonderamy: there you are!
sarawearsskirts: ooops, too many tabs open!
ColdCell: an impact how? only people that ALREADY buy hand made will see it :P
abbey753: we are using the graphic on our holiday sale banner and flyers at etsybead
ColdCell left the room
wonderamy: also, make sure www.buyhandmade.org is in your email signatures along with your shop and team URLS
wonderamy: coldcell, it will encourage more etsy buyers and sellers to go sign the pledge,
wonderamy: which is limited as you say,
sarawearsskirts: if you use it as an image on facebook or myspace or other sites like craftster, other people off of etsy will see it
sarawearsskirts: anywhere you social network you could be using it
wonderamy: but part of what will make buyhandmade successful is to get a lot of numbers in there so it will be a big news story
sarawearsskirts: so far about 2,300 people have signed the pledge, but there are more than 20 times more sellers than that
wonderamy: so the people already in the handcrafting movements will have to beef it up first, and then the word will spread
sarawearsskirts: so clearfly people from etsy haven't all signed the pledge
sarawearsskirts: right
wonderamy: more effectively to those who arent in our movement
sarawearsskirts: this week i did this one: Include the handmade pledge in your Note to Buyer included in the transaction email.
willowglass: super!
sarawearsskirts: so you probably have people buying things in your shop who don't buyhandmade everyday or don't know about the pledge
abbey753: that good idea
sarawearsskirts: so this way it reinforces something they clearly are into
sarawearsskirts: since they're buying from your shop
thebeadkeeper: great idea sara...also mention it in forums. just b/c they shop here does not mean they only buy handmade!
willowglass: and those people might spread the work in their workplace, to their friends, etc.
sarawearsskirts: exactly
willowglass: work=word
wonderamy: any place you go on the web, make sure buy handmade is in your signatures, your images, anything
sarawearsskirts: this is obvious, but Include the handmade pledge on your blog or personal website.
wonderamy: blog comments, any place you communicate...spread the word
sarawearsskirts: if you haven't already, the downloadable stuff on buyhandmade makes it super easy
sarawearsskirts: if you google "buyhandmade.org" it comes up over 20,000 times already
thebeadkeeper: not sure how to add it to my banner though
sarawearsskirts: having it posted in blogs makes it way more visible on google
wonderamy: the word is spreading fast!
willowglass: and don't just limit this to your Etsy sales, if you sell on other venues, include it in your transaction emails as well
sarawearsskirts: your etsy banner?
thebeadkeeper: yep
wonderamy: bead, to you mean technically, or in terms of the look of you banner?
sarawearsskirts: whatever graphic program you used to make your banner, you can insert the image into that, and resave it as a jpeg
sarawearsskirts: and then upload it here
thebeadkeeper: ok
sarawearsskirts: maybe some people will offer helpful services to people who don't know how to do that?
sarawearsskirts: you can also mention it in your shop announcement
sarawearsskirts: that's an easy thing to do
abbey753: decorate your bills and correspondance with buy handmade
sarawearsskirts: nice
thebeadkeeper: I hate to alter the banner I have....I wish they had a full banner we could use temp
wonderamy: there are often people in the forums who offer inexpenseive banner help. maybe some of them would be interested in helping people integrate the pledge into thier banners "pro bono"
sarawearsskirts: also, your email signature - include one of the graphics in your email signature, or if you prefer a text only signature, include the URL with a note saying you support the handmade pledge.
wonderamy: bead, you can make a copy of the banner you have, alter it, and save a "clean" version to return to later.
thebeadkeeper: yeah, I'll just do that
sarawearsskirts: we can make a banner you can download and post in your shop available at http://team.etsy.conm
Marmalady joined the room
sarawearsskirts: *com
thebeadkeeper: that'd be cool sara
willowglass: ty
sarawearsskirts: sure thing
clangclang joined the room
wonderamy: the only problem with that is that it doesnt have your shop name on it - you would still have to alter it. but thats a great idea sara - it would have space in it for a shop's name
sarawearsskirts: you can also participate to make it visible on flickr: * Take a photo of yourself with the Buy Handmade logo and submit it to the Flickr Pool: http://www.flickr.com/groups/buyhandmade/
wonderamy: we'll do that folks, thats a great idea sara
sarawearsskirts: make a sign that says "i pledge to buy handmade" and pose with it
clangclang left the room
sarawearsskirts: and have your friends do the same
thebeadkeeper: groupie shot!!
sarawearsskirts: totally!
clangclang joined the room
wonderamy: a couple things i want to make sure you all know before we move on:
abbey753: etsy challenge for team to get 100% of members signatures
sarawearsskirts: i like that idea!
wonderamy: 1. all of the guides we are producing for buyhandmade, holidays, and teams will be posted in the Storque, and available on team.etsy.com as a web page and as a PDF.
sarawearsskirts: (for easy printing if you like)
kcjewelbox joined the room
wonderamy: 2. We will announce the launching of new guides and resources in the forums as we have them, but they might get buried fast...so check http://team.etsy.com/teamsbuyhandmade.html frequently.
sarawearsskirts: yes! daily! weekly!
wonderamy: you can also check the storque frequently...we are trying to keep team.etsy.com and the storque integrated.
sarawearsskirts: keep your eyes peeled today and tomorrow for the ten minute marketing calendar
sarawearsskirts: one thing to do for ten minutes a day to promote your team and your shop
wonderamy: 3. Some people feel overwhelmed by the amount of content in the Storque. We have a solution for this for teams!
sarawearsskirts: starting nov 1, til dec 15
wonderamy: The solution is:
thebeadkeeper: will the calendar be in the storque or teamsetsy/
sarawearsskirts: we'll make it visible in both places
wonderamy: on team.etsy.com, we have links to the search result strings for things like : Etsy Team Guides, Etsy Handmade Holidays, etc. so when you go to the Storque, you can go striaght to listings of Teams related resources.
sarawearsskirts: it will live at http://team.etsy.com
sarawearsskirts: we'll announce it in the storque and the forums
clangclang left the room
Marmalady left the room
siansburys joined the room
abbey753: that will be nice no searching
wonderamy: yes
sarawearsskirts: yep, we want to make things as easy and straightforward for evertyone as possible
sarawearsskirts: so, do you all have any ideas we didn't mention on how to spread buyhandmade around the web?
wonderamy: hey, have you all signed up on the general teams email list yet?
sarawearsskirts: ahhh! good point, amy!
sarawearsskirts: the signup slot is at http://team.etsy.com
sarawearsskirts: we won't spam you, of course
sarawearsskirts: but it will be vital info on how to find all the guides and goodies we talk about
virtuallori: just did
thebeadkeeper: I don't know....I signed up for tn team
sarawearsskirts: delivered right to you
wonderamy: we will send you useful information about how to find good etsy resources for your team on a weekly basis between now and the holidays
thebeadkeeper: have to check on that
sarawearsskirts: thebeadkeeper, you need to sign up for the email list - signing up for the team just puts your name on the profile page
sarawearsskirts: it's an opt-in list, meaning you're not automatically added (that would be spammy)
sarawearsskirts: do you have any more questions for us?
sarawearsskirts: we're happy to answer!
siansburys: sorry i came in late I have no idea what you're talking about, lol
thebeadkeeper: Is this the only topic or are we moving on to other promo ideas/
sarawearsskirts: ha!
sarawearsskirts: sainsbury, we're talking about promoting buyhandmade.org
siansburys: ah ok
wonderamy: so ten-minute marketing will be something that is effective if most of etsy's team members follow it for 10 minutes every day. for example, if one day's assignment is to write a short blog post about a great gift find on etsy from another etsy team member,
sarawearsskirts: how to do it with the online promotional tools
kcjewelbox left the room
wonderamy: think about how great it will be if 2000 team members all do it in one day!
sarawearsskirts: right!
wonderamy: the daily 10-minuet marketing tips are things like that
sarawearsskirts: the thing that makes viral marketing work is when it's done en masse
thebeadkeeper: assuming we have a blog...right?
sarawearsskirts: sure
siansburys: assuming we use our blog....
wonderamy: things you can do while your tea is brewing in the morning, which combined with all the other teams member's efforts, becomes a huge promotional force
thebeadkeeper: lol
sarawearsskirts: (that's just an example, not all of them are blog related, we promise)
siansburys: ok good
thebeadkeeper: do you recommend setting up a blog page?
siansburys: although i promise i will try to use my blog
wonderamy: yes siansbury - we will have alternative tips when the ones that are posted aren't relevant!
sarawearsskirts: it's something we don't want you to be bogged down with, but to commit just a fewminutes each day
wonderamy: on blogging:
wonderamy: it can be a VERY effective tool for an etsy seller. sarawearsskirts taught me this, as she has a very successful blog associated with her shop
siansburys: so is all this info on 10 minute promo thingys on team page?
wonderamy: it gives buyers and potential buyers a way to know you a little better and fall in love with you more.
sarawearsskirts: it will be posted today or tomorrow (before nov 1)
siansburys: ah ok (sorry for being late, lol)
wonderamy: it gives a more personal realm of information and understanding to your shop that your shop can't give
thebeadkeeper: lol sara
sarawearsskirts: we'll make it hard to miss when we post it!
wonderamy: it will be posted TOMORROW, not today....
wonderamy: :)
sarawearsskirts: but sign up for the teams mailing list by putting in youremail at http://team.etsy.com and we'll send you an email about it
sarawearsskirts: (okay, tomrorow)
thebeadkeeper: do you blog about your shop or about personal info?
wonderamy: we're trying to publish lots of guides this week:
wonderamy: -ten minute marketing
wonderamy: -creative event ideas for buyhandmade and teams
wonderamy: -making the most of online and offline promos
sarawearsskirts: i blog about personal stuff, but also things that i think are important, like buyhandmade.org - i try not to make it tooooo promotional
wonderamy: and maybe a couple more.
thebeadkeeper: you guys are busy!
sarawearsskirts: blogs that are too promotional aren't interesting
wonderamy: phew!!! we are typing our little fingers off over here making these guides!
abbey753: sounds great
sarawearsskirts: yep! this is the week of the guides!
sarawearsskirts: to get the ball rolling!
thebeadkeeper: can I get your url to check it out?
sarawearsskirts: it's http://girlscantell.typepad.com
wonderamy: I also thinkwe should make a guide about having an effective blog to complement your shop. would that be a useful guide, etsy sellers?
sarawearsskirts: i think that would be very useful
smashing: yes! :)
siansburys: yep definitely
sarawearsskirts: we've talking in workshops before about how not *everyone* is really a great candidate for having a blog
thebeadkeeper: yes!
sarawearsskirts: it's just not some people's thing
abbey753: yes
sarawearsskirts: but for others, it's a really great tool to get your customers to know more about you
thebeadkeeper: well, it's kind of like journaling to me....
wonderamy: yes, it only works well if you can commit to it
siansburys: ahhh see thats my prob, there's nothing to know about me
thebeadkeeper: yes there is sains
sarawearsskirts: awwww, i bet that's not totally true
siansburys: ahahah
sarawearsskirts: littleputbooks has a GREAT blog about how to be a successful seller
sarawearsskirts: so it's very useful to other etsyans
sarawearsskirts: she has talked inworkshops about how you have to find something you know about, and stick with it, and be useful and knowledgeable
wonderamy: it can be personal/jounral-like, or informational, or just updates on your creative process and how you do what you do.
thebeadkeeper: I think knowing where to blog is important. that's why I haven't done it yet...blogspot, typepad...so many choices
sarawearsskirts: http://littleput.blogspot.com/
wonderamy: there is also the issue of the TEAM blog...which can really be great.
siansburys: i have too many thebeadkeeper
sarawearsskirts: blogspot is nice becaus eit's free
abbey753 left the room
sarawearsskirts: typepad is what i use because it's nice to use
sarawearsskirts: (but not free)
wonderamy: If you dont want to put the time into a daily personal gblog, you can help make your team blog shine, which can serve much of the same purpose.
sarawearsskirts: team blogs are a great way to have one spot to list all your teams members
