sarawearsskirts: hi everyone!
createdwithfire4U joined the room
sarawearsskirts: thanks for coming in!
sarawearsskirts: the topic of today's workshop is "ten minute marketing".
FishOnTheWall joined the room
sarawearsskirts: for those who don't know, we've been posting a series in the storque for etsy teams called "team tips" - http://www.etsy.com/storque/section/howTos/article/etsy-team-tips-promote-another-team/1004/ -
gigglinggoldfish joined the room
sarawearsskirts: i'd like to solicit some ideas and opinions on this from you guys, so i'll open the floor to comments soon
sarawearsskirts: the idea behind this series is that if each team takes a little bit of time each week to perform some small marketing, networking or team building effort, it will make the teams an even stronger presence at etsy and on the web than they already are.
noradora joined the room
did anyone here do any of the ten minute marketing tips in december?
hiljohn joined the room
6 yay, sarawearsskirts: great! about 25%! not tooo shabby
littlebrownbird joined the room
littlebrownbird left the room
sarawearsskirts: team tips are posted in the storque, but also logged on the teams pages here: http://team.etsy.com/teamtips.html, so you can go back and do tips for any weeks your team might have missed

LTCreatesJewelry left the room
sarawearsskirts: occasionally, like before a holiday or other big event, we'll do a little series of ten minute marketing ideas for shops and teams. these are tasks to promote your shop and your team that don't take much time individually, and by the end of the week, ideally the sum of what you've done adds up to a

sarawearsskirts asks, what are your simple, useful, efficient and effective ideas for marketing that could be done in ten minutes?
sarawearsskirts: go!
Duet: take the time to add a line about your street team in your shop announcement
castleman: add a link to the bottom of your signature of your email to include your etsy store
brettsarahtops joined the room
sarawearsskirts: (you can see the ones we posted in december here: http://team.etsy.com/tenminutemarketing.html
castleman: or the etsy team page
TheFleeciestBaby joined the room
sarawearsskirts: these are great ideas!
sarawearsskirts: keep them coming!
contraptions left the room
castleman: join some yahoo groups that might be interested and join in conversations
Duet: even if you can't participate in your teams sale of the week (or whatever) add a line about it in your announcement
castleman: your link in your sig will get some clicks
rubyfaz left the room
Duet: hook up some team members that way
bluepebbledesigns left the room
zJayne: If you don't have a myspace, make one, just use it for your Etsy shop, it gets hits.
susarto: flickr works too ;)
castleman: flickr too
sarawearsskirts: myspace is great for promoting!
Duet: spend 15 minutes a day learning your photo editing program so your pics will shine
emmylouhelmuth: use the mini in your social networks like facebook - since most those folks already know you
castleman: blog
handmade joined the room
sarawearsskirts: flickr is also great! teams should have flickr pools!
jnoriginals: Include announcements in your shop about featured fellow artists that you (or others on your team) have blogged about.
PoPkO joined the room
midnightrabbits: Link blogs
castleman: look for message boards that your merchandise would appeal to
PoPkO: Hello!
castleman: and post there with a signature
mylittleaura: do some contest
juliebcreative: make a myspace accoutn for the team?
Duet: ask customers to swap promotional support with you.."for awesome handspun fabric, please visit so and so's shop at"
estasketch: lots of people post in promotions & crafting/business looking for specific items. steer them towards teammember's shops when you can..
sarawearsskirts asks, what could we do to make ten minute marketing tips more useful to you?
castleman: like mom's groups or some such
juliebcreative: do it fo rme
lakeeriebeachglass joined the room
juliebcreative: jk
thecraftboutique: lol julie =P
castleman: heehehhehehehe julie
Andie7a joined the room
PoPkO: make them new ideas and really relevant perhaps?
Duet: survery what people are posting in the fora and steer the tops towards those issues
Duet: survey, even
midnightrabbits: somehow have team meetings
Duet: and tips
PoPkO: make a checklist
jnoriginals: Make sure transcripts of discussions like this are posted in the Community section.
Duet: sheesh
PoPkO: make a checklist of 400 things and choose say, five of them each day
sarawearsskirts: popko, i'll be posting brand new spiffy ten minute marketing tips next week
sarawearsskirts: as next week's team tips
juliebcreative: cool
castleman: ooo i like that idea popko
sarawearsskirts: but i am soliciting input from you all now :)
sarawearsskirts: oooh, that's a good one, popko!
jnoriginals: Give us a preview via email.
sarawearsskirts: via the big mass teams email?
sarawearsskirts: i could do that...
castleman: i'd like to get it in my inbox
jnoriginals: Yes, that's what I meant.
PoPkO: i feel like the 10 min marketing tips that ive seen (only once, sorry) were really basic, so maybe you could introduce differnet levels of marketing tips. beginner, advanced, etc
handmade: checklists are good!
sarawearsskirts: excellent!
sarawearsskirts: i could certainly do that
thecraftboutique: I never follow lists.
hisss: beginner would be good for me, i'm not even on a team yet
thecraftboutique: even the ones I make for myself. LoL
sarawearsskirts: (i love getting feedback from you all. this is great!)
susarto: checklists are good for me too :D
castleman: i think maybe a tip for beginners, but also tips for those of us who have been around a bit
sarawearsskirts: i love lists.
jnoriginals: Include links to examples of good marketing.
susarto: and beginner, etc...
sarawearsskirts: i can do that
sarawearsskirts: perfect.
executeme joined the room
sarawearsskirts: keep going, you all are so full of good ideas!
littlebrownbird: great idea jnoriginals
juliebcreative: checklists are good
castleman: what about some internet sites that offer inexpensive advertising?
juliebcreative: good idea
midnightrabbits: that'd be good
executeme: Modish gave me a lot of traffic
sarawearsskirts: okay
sarawearsskirts: modish is nice!
brepettis joined the room
littlebrownbird: modish?
estasketch: not that i can think of many... but some quick, easy ideas for promoting outside etsy specifically would be great too.. bring in new customers and get your team a bit more active outside the site..
PoPkO: see, personally i have a list of things i try to do in a week. add to flick, join a flickr group, add a new thing to trunkt, apply to one website, create a linesheet in case a wholesaler calls. theres a lot to be done, and sometimes i dotn know where to begin or end or whats more important etc.
executeme: And that was just me being featured
Duet: tag your flickr photos
sarawearsskirts: for those who are joining us mid-conversation, we did ten minute marketing before the holidays this year, in the month of december. you can find those tips here: http://team.etsy.com/tenminutemarketing.html
PoPkO: so maybe having a importance factor in there too?
sarawearsskirts: we're brainstorming new ideas on this concept
sarawearsskirts: good points, popko
Duet: gets awesome customers like executeme who do fabulous things with your creations;)
PoPkO: thanks, you can hire me now
zJayne: When you post places that ask for tag words, post your Etsy tag name. Ex. zJayne - works for searches
susarto: i have just tagged all my flickr photos recently too...and my etsy stuff...
sarawearsskirts: we liked the ten minute marketing idea because even on a really busy day,
executeme: Teehee, Duet
sarawearsskirts: you can find ten minutes to do some small thing
Duet: mention something awesome you saw on etsy to anyone who calls you
handmade: some small thing besides just relisting. har har
thecraftboutique: lol
castleman: groups/messaage boards to join on line that are fairly generic interest?
sarawearsskirts: these are great! keep them coming!
castleman: that allow a signature line ad?
estasketch: buy something from a team member! and wear it everywhere or give it to a friend or anything as an excuse to pass on their store url too
PoPkO: are we naming ways to market ourselves now or are we suggetsing how to better the whole 10 minmarketing thing?
Duet: hand your mom, dad, bro, sis, friend, partner a short stack of your cards and ask them to pass them out
castleman: i promoted etsy today cuz i had a picture of something i bought here in a picture of something else
susarto: lol i do that estasketch ;)
castleman: and people wanted to know where i got it
estasketch: :D
sarawearsskirts: well, ten minute marketing is posted as a team tip, but ideally it's something individuals can do singly to promote their team (and themselves, really)
handmade left the room
emmylouhelmuth: that's what I was thinking
executeme: I have had buttons made, that I put on the advertising boards in artsy cafes
sarawearsskirts: duet, that's a great idea , esp. if your team has team cards made
Duet: nodsnods
sarawearsskirts: team business cards are fabulous
jnoriginals: Would love to see a place for Team Showcases.
juliebcreative: 10 mins kind fo limits you to doing things online
juliebcreative: i would like some more in depth ideas/plans
Duet: ask your team for a dollar or so each to get team cards made if need be
juliebcreative: that may take more than mins
sarawearsskirts: jnorginals, the teams are going to get an expanded presence on etsy this year.
brettsarahtops: moo.com makes cool little cards
castleman: research is what takes me the longest
littlebrownbird: I have business cards for my "real" job. I put a sticker on the back with my etsy shop. I'll have to make new ones and add my team.
castleman: finding places to go and do stuff
sarawearsskirts: duet - true! or this can be what team shops proceeds go to
susarto: i just got moos today in the mail :D
castleman: if some of that research was done
jnoriginals: I hadn't heard about expanded team presence, Sara...I'm not even 2 months old on Etsy. Great news!
castleman: and a set of links to places to consider joining for example was sent out
castleman: i'd be morelikely to do that
sarawearsskirts: (info on team shops: http://team.etsy.com/teamshops.html)
michon joined the room
vintagebroochco joined the room
zJayne: Team Cards and Bus. Cards are helpful when they say SEARCH a Specific Word on ETSY
sarawearsskirts: (this link might work better: http://team.etsy.com/teamshops.html
Duet: good point
castleman: i meant like generic yahoo groups, message boards, advertisign possibilities
sarawearsskirts: good points!
castleman: etc.
sarawearsskirts: this is fabulous, everyone.
Duet: offer a mailing list for the team
Girlontherocks asks, what teams are represented here today?

thecraftboutique: but I'm not sure. LoL
Duet: crochet, Fish, lol
brettsarahtops: I don't even knw what a team is
castleman: i'm guessing crochet
sarawearsskirts: brettsarah: http://team.etsy.com for info on teams!
FishOnTheWall: no, someone said Off THe Wall
brettsarahtops: thanks!
executeme: That was me
littlebrownbird: Wow, duet. Thought it was a whole different "handmade" team
FishOnTheWall: is that a team?
brettsarahtops: I'm obviously new, posted my first item today
Duet: lmao
executeme: http://offthewall.etsy.com
nanouk joined the room
juliebcreative: welcome brett
brettsarahtops: thanks
executeme: Sure is
jnoriginals: I think teams can be incredibly supportive. Is there a way for newbies to complete a self-questionnaire to help them locate a team(s) that might work well for them?
sarawearsskirts: ps. if anyone has questions, you can type /ask then your question, and i'll post it here
Duet: grab treasuries for your team, make team minis for you blog, myspace, etc
castleman: i think really huge groups tend to get less and less helpful tho
midnightrabbits: or maybe etsy to suggest to them to check out teams
lakeeriebeachglass: Treasuries are GREAT for Teams!
midnightrabbits: what do you call really huge
CraftyMamaMia joined the room
castleman: several hundred
midnightrabbits: EFA has about 300 and we're a very supportive group
hiljohn left the room
castleman: team challenges
juliebcreative: arts in RI has like 15 members'
jnoriginals: I think each team has its own personality; the degree to which it is helpful, regardless of the size, depends on the commitment of group members.
sarawearsskirts: malcolm gladwell talks about how groups over 150 people are less effective in his book "blink"
castleman: it probably depends ont he group i imagine
juliebcreative: but we're all very active
TheBrassHussy joined the room
sarawearsskirts: but it's different for all teams, of course.
montezumamudd: The Mud Team is 125 members and we are very active and supportive.
Duet: ESST is rather new, but I see good things for it's future
castleman: i'm on one team that is so big and diverse that it is much more a social outlet than anything else
castleman: which is fine
sarawearsskirts: if no one has more questions (type /ask then the question) we can wrap up for today
midnightrabbits: being members of more than one team can be helpful
jnoriginals: So, if Malcolm is correct, groups of 150 people might need to be divided into subinterest groups, working on different projects. I see a little of that on my own team.
sarawearsskirts: yes, jn, exactly!
sarawearsskirts: when the group nears 150, he says it should splinter off to work more effectively
zJayne: thank you
CombustionGlassworks joined the room
lakeeriebeachglass left the room
sarawearsskirts: but that's probably enough to have a whole other discussion on
jnoriginals: Will a transcript of this discussion be available somewhere?
emmylouhelmuth: I find it hard to communicate with the team I'm on - there is an awkward message board and that's about it and the only notification for things in through a thread in teams
zJayne left the room
littlebrownbird: We have over 300 members but only about twenty who are really active
sarawearsskirts: yes!
sarawearsskirts: transcripts are posted at http://team.etsy.com/workshops.html
jnoriginals: Thank you, Sara!
sarawearsskirts: my pleasure!
Duet: thank you sara
