juditavill left the room
estasketch joined the room
iWear1: that was a good team tip did enjoy there are other fellow minded etsy out there
sarawearsskirts: hello, people who just came in!
sarawearsskirts: http://www.etsy.com/storque/section/howTos/article/team-tips-green-your-team/1608/
sarawearsskirts: is this week's team tip, so we're going to talk today about how to make your team and your shop a little more eco-firendly
iWear1: yay
sarawearsskirts: i'd love to hear some of your ideas, since i know you all have brilliant ideas
ReiGN joined the room
sarawearsskirts: and many people use environmentally friendly methods and practices now
IndieMoon: one of the items mentioned, the use of recycled shipping supplies, I really like that idea, but have read on the forums that some buyers do not.
sarawearsskirts: indiemoon, this is a tough one, i think
sarawearsskirts: tough to execute well, i would say
montezumamudd: I always use recycled shipping materials - haven't had a complaint yet!
sarawearsskirts: but some people have great success
greenlupa: I've received a couple things in boxes that were ready to fall apart - I'm all for recycling but that was a bit much!
daniellexo: pop a cute sticker on the used packaging and i'm sure 99.9% of your customers will be happy!
sarawearsskirts: i think bringing awareness to it makes more impact and doesn't just look cheapy?
BululuStudio: as long as it is clean
IndieMoon: I agree.. I was wondering if a blurb in the shop could let the buyer 'opt-in/out' for their purchase
iWear1: it true perhaps if you explain what your doing and thanking them for taking part in it it will work better
sarawearsskirts: yes, clean and in good shape to protect your item
daniellexo: ;)
sarawearsskirts: i like those stickers!
greenlupa: Go cute stickers!
IndieMoon: not if it's falling apart greenlupa ... the seller should keep the quality up
iWear1: yay fore green stickers
IndieMoon: I agree
daniellexo: oh yes i want to make a sitcker for the shop that says 100% recycled packaging
iWear1: and that would work
sarawearsskirts: i would also include information that you do use recycled materials, so they're not shocked or expecting shiny new ones
sarawearsskirts: yes! a sticker or a stamp
daniellexo: if they know you're trying to be eco-friendly ...
iWear1: they should want to do there part
estasketch: it works well if you're selling eco friendly products too. moreso than it might for other items...
daniellexo: totally!
IndieMoon: agree estasketch because the buyer would already be looking for eco-friendly
iWear1: but its always a good idea to try and do your part where ever possible
InspirationByFlorna: exactly, I have so many jiffy bags from different sellers
IndieMoon: I particularly reuse bubble-wrap
iWear1: yeah reuse the box that came with all the stuff you just bought for your fave Etsy seller
daniellexo: what about promo items for your team
sarawearsskirts: i have to say, one of my favorite things about buying on etsy is seeing the creative ways sellers wrap and package things
greenlupa: I got sea glass from Artistic Detour in a great recycled box yesterday covered in dragonfly stamps - too pretty!
IndieMoon: true
daniellexo: yeah its like getting a present :)
sarawearsskirts: oh pretty, greenlupa!
iWear1: and guilt free shopping
FishOnTheWall joined the room
estasketch: i make thank you cards out of prints and things i messed up... but most of the mailers i get i can't really reuse when shipping my big flat stuff.
estasketch: i should save up all the mailers i get and give them to somebody else who can use them
sarawearsskirts: i like to save bits of yarn and ribbon to put bows on packages i ship out - just to make them pretty and nice
sarawearsskirts: that's a great idea, estasketch!
BululuStudio: that would be awsome danielle
sarawearsskirts: i just went through all my flatwork from college and made a big pile of drawings to cut into little thank you cards
sarawearsskirts: danielle, i love all the related items your posting. great finds!
aggieray joined the room
estasketch: oh nice :) i can't bear to throw any of it away, i always know it'll come in handy one day... haha
urns: i get my packing materials from local business that only recieve items and do not ship out of their shops
sarawearsskirts: urns, what a great idea!
InspirationByFlorna: if you make greeting cards, you could make your own paper
urns: thanks
sarawearsskirts: i like that you go locally to get the materials
sarawearsskirts: oooh, go on, inspirationbyflorna
IndieMoon: yes!
FishOnTheWall: I make paper for my thank you notes from the shredder at work.
sarawearsskirts: fishonthewall, i love that idea
daniellexo: i wanted to share an idea i stole from Handmade detroit
IndieMoon: fishonthewall that's a GREAT Source!
aggieray: anyone know about the main showcase, says it goes on sale now, but no slots are available
mkanvinde left the room
daniellexo: they print their logo on t-shirts they pick up at thrift stores
sarawearsskirts: aggie, sometimes it sells out alarmingly fast
greenlupa: Is paper making hard? I grow herbs and wanted to try adding them to some paper
daniellexo: and then sell them for $10 at shows
daniellexo: such a good idea
sarawearsskirts: oh, danielle, that idea is fabulous
InspirationByFlorna: I was looking yesterday online about how to make your own paper out of other paper
sarawearsskirts: so the shirts are one of a kind
aggieray: i've have been watching it since 11:50
FishOnTheWall: And just this morning I printed my thank you card (old school print shop style card) on the back of an old flyer.
IndieMoon: daniellexo that is a cool idea
jared joined the room
aggieray: are they usually late
daniellexo: nice fishonthewall!
sarawearsskirts: oh no, jared has a clone!
daniellexo: haha
jared left the room
daniellexo: who loves himself
jared: hehe
sarawearsskirts: ha
InspirationByFlorna: Greenlupa, I can find the website for paper making if you like
aggieray left the room
greenlupa: Yes please!
sarawearsskirts: inspirationbyflorna, can you find a link perhaps to the tutorial?
InspirationByFlorna: ok, brb
FishOnTheWall: Paper making is VERY EASY- just use a blender just for paper, and don't mix it up with the one for frozen drinks!
greenlupa: No thick margaritas?
IndieMoon: I would love to see a demo/class in the Vlabs on papermaking Inspirationbyflorna
aggieray joined the room
sarawearsskirts: ah ha!
sarawearsskirts: thanks!
iWear1: yeah question who likes the idea of buying a stenciled or screened shirt though the person but the shirt from a goodwill or value village or thirft store?
aggieray left the room
greenlupa: As long as it's clean, no problem
InspirationByFlorna: http://www.pioneerthinking.com/makingpaper.html
iWear1: well of course
sarawearsskirts: wonderful!
estasketch: yeah, i think it's a great idea. like selling vintage, but better
FishOnTheWall: Arnord Grummer has kits that have the deckle & fram & screens. I have those and one I made myself with an old picture frame & window screen.
IndieMoon: iwear1 - you could always cut up the shirt and make it into something else! (a bag maybe?
InspirationByFlorna: its a great site
sarawearsskirts: i really like the idea of thrift store shirts becoming more interesting
Please vote: Would you buy a recycled shirt?
sarawearsskirts: and promo shirts that aren't made form new materials
Vote results: 8 yay, 2 nay, 3 abstain
BululuStudio: to use wear it , NOT
iWear1: thank you

InspirationByFlorna: Greenlupa, your welcome. Yes
sarawearsskirts: we always involve the kids from the neighborhood - the papermaking seems like such a fun activity for older kids!
IndieMoon: hi scrappychicdesigns
sarawearsskirts: hi, scrappychic!
sarawearsskirts: bye, jared!
sarawearsskirts: thanks for the update!
jared left the room

iWear1: yeah with supervision
sarawearsskirts: very, very fun!
scrappychicdesigns: HI IndieMoon, Sarawaerskirts!
sarawearsskirts: so, daniellexo pointed out the shirt idea for team promotion
scrappychicdesigns: can I please ask a question 'cause its my first time here?
InspirationByFlorna: for the paper making, everybody is always giving away free blenders on craigslist or cheap at garage sales
sarawearsskirts: what else can teams do as a team to be more eco-firendly?
projectfelt joined the room
sarawearsskirts: hello, projectfelt!
projectfelt: Hello!
sarawearsskirts: we just talked a bit about recycled packaging
projectfelt: where is my avatar?
scrappychicdesigns: hello projectfelt
projectfelt: cool
IndieMoon: inspirationbyflorna also you could check to see if there is a FreeCycle group in your area... they often have kitchen appliances avail for free
BululuStudio: use recycled paper for promo
sarawearsskirts: (projectfelt is the leader of the eco-etsy team ,which is all about recycled packaging
sarawearsskirts: )
projectfelt: nevermind
projectfelt: YEAH
sarawearsskirts: bye!
sarawearsskirts: thanks for popping in !
InspirationByFlorna: Indie, thanks, thats a great idea!
FishOnTheWall left the room
IndieMoon: yw
sarawearsskirts: yes! freecycling blenders and then using handmade paper for team promos would be awesome
BululuStudio: of course
projectfelt: i've always wanted to learn to make my own paper
iWear1: yeah and printed shirts yeah papper making is alot of fun
InspirationByFlorna: this year I bought 2 greeting cards made out of handmade paper, handmade in Thailand, they were so beautiful
IndieMoon: for that matter iwear1 - you could conceivable cut up and blend in some of those tshirts into paper!!!
BululuStudio: maybe blend some of the Tshirts with the paper, you know cotton
Dawno joined the room
projectfelt: can I use my blender from home?
ReiGN left the room
iWear1: now there would be a project
IndieMoon: or just cast the paper onto tshirt substrate iwear1
sarawearsskirts: projectfelt, you probably don't want to use the same blender ou use for smoothies
InspirationByFlorna: project, yes. I dont see why not
projectfelt: lol
projectfelt: true
BululuStudio: cast the paper?
InspirationByFlorna: well, yer lol
sarawearsskirts: but we were saying finding used blenders on the cheap is pretty easy
projectfelt: chocolate milk shakes are more my speed
Dawno left the room
projectfelt: goodwill!
IndieMoon: I just used an old blender from the 70's to make paper pulp projectfelt
InspirationByFlorna: paper smoothies dont seem very tasteful, lol
iWear1: it does wash out though you may not want too just depending on your paper
projectfelt: where are there tutorials on making this paper?
projectfelt: haha
sarawearsskirts: http://www.pioneerthinking.com/makingpaper.html
iWear1: so i have another idea for local groups
sarawearsskirts: from inspirationbyflorna
IndieMoon: yes bululustudio the pulp can be cast in various ways
sarawearsskirts: oooh, tell us, iwear1
BululuStudio: ok
InspirationByFlorna: brb
iWear1: not quite orginal but well if they are a local group they could have a veg of envriomentaly friendly get together thats what i was thinking
sarawearsskirts: like a pot luck?
InspirationByFlorna: back
InspirationByFlorna: it was the phone
BululuStudio: plant some cooking herbs, maybe?
sarawearsskirts: ooooh, that'd be nice
iWear1: yeah or just a show where we can show of our work and make a percentage of the profits go to a envrio group perhaps
projectfelt: my boyfriend found a site when he was looking for plugs, where every set of earrings they sell, they plant a tree
sarawearsskirts: i'd love to see teams make cookbooks, as promo materials, written / printed on handmade paper
daniellexo: awww
daniellexo: thats awesome projectfelt
daniellexo: :)
sarawearsskirts: oh, projectfelt, that's awesome
projectfelt: I know they are a completly sustainable company
InspirationByFlorna: Project, thats a great idea
IndieMoon: I like that one sarawearsskirts
sarawearsskirts: i thnk those would be promos people would really want / want to keep
projectfelt: I was proud of him for finding the site and caring about the whole idea
daniellexo: ohhh i would buy that sara
iWear1: i have heard of site for every person who goes to the site they will donate food to the hungry
sarawearsskirts: since promos can be really wasteful if they're not thoughtful
sarawearsskirts: danielle wrote a great article on great promos vs. business cards
scrappychicdesigns left the room
kraftykristen joined the room
IndieMoon: I actually have one we did for our group at work...
daniellexo: finding a good way to make promos that you can sell and make money for your team and be eco-friendly
daniellexo: is the ultimate
daniellexo: haha
daniellexo: you get a medal if you do that
daniellexo: ill make you one
estasketch: haha
projectfelt: maybe the ecoetsy team can run a promo where we will plant a tree for every sale we get and then take pictures of the new tree and start a flickr group
estasketch: i saw that article, i can't wait to try some of those.. once our team finally gets organized i mean
iWear1: that sounds amazing projectfelt
sarawearsskirts: http://www.etsy.com/storque/section/howTos/article/dont-order-another-1000-business-cards/1484/
dennisanderson joined the room
sarawearsskirts: oh, projectfelt, that would be amazing!
projectfelt: ill have to look into it more and talk to the team about it at our next meeting
BululuStudio: I liek that projectfelt
projectfelt: the question is, where would we plant them for those of us apt. dwellers
sarawearsskirts: projectfelt, i bet there is a local organization you could partner with
BululuStudio: projectfelt how about the people who lives in a apartment?
sarawearsskirts: perhaps treevitalize does work in your area in pa?
projectfelt: is it allowed to just go to a random park and start planting things? lol
sarawearsskirts: i think you need permission
kraftykristen left the room
sarawearsskirts: but people, generally, like trees, so it's not hard to get permission
IndieMoon: or your city's 'Adopt-a-spot' program
BululuStudio: i don't think so
greenlupa: How about a donation to the Arbour Day Foundation?
dennisanderson left the room
sarawearsskirts: (people in south philly are they only people i've ever met who don't like trees)
projectfelt: aha thats a great idea
sarawearsskirts: oh, greenlupa, that's a good idea
scrappychicdesigns joined the room
scrappychicdesigns left the room
projectfelt: what?
projectfelt: thats not nice sara
projectfelt: what kind of people are they?
sarawearsskirts: they think trees are dirty, it's insane!
sarawearsskirts: but we plant trees here anyway
projectfelt: cool, ill check it out
IndieMoon: dirty!?!
BululuStudio: coo coo
sarawearsskirts: yeah, people in south philly are nuts.
greenlupa: Totally! I live in the country surrounded by'em! And LOVE it!
projectfelt: whats dirty is our air
iWear1: so i was thinking was tree less world would look like
sarawearsskirts: oh, that would be sad!
InspirationByFlorna: I love trees too
IndieMoon: and suffocating... since they provide oxygen
iWear1: i truly think so
sarawearsskirts: oooh, danielle posted a listing card for the plant-able cards
sarawearsskirts: i love them
projectfelt: hey that image gave me another idea too!
daniellexo: yeah those are so great
BululuStudio: I'm growing a lemon tree and I live in a apt.
sarawearsskirts: oh nice!
projectfelt: what if team members went out and purchased a plant of some sort, listed it on etsy and the profits from the sale goes to an enviromental organization?
projectfelt: is that allowed?
iWear1: yeah my mom makes xmas trees ordament and they are to be planted
BululuStudio: I like that idea
iWear1: friend mom and never mind
sarawearsskirts: projectfelt, my initial reaction is that i don't see anything wrong with that idea, as long as it follows local laws, etc about shipping plants
projectfelt: true
IndieMoon: maybe a seed swap
sarawearsskirts: ooooh, i like that one, indiemoon!
projectfelt: plus we would have to choose plants that are native to the whole country
daniellexo: oh bululu
sarawearsskirts: or seed packets a promo materials!
IndieMoon: or a packet of seeds as a promo item
daniellexo: how is that tree doing inside?
daniellexo: i want one!
IndieMoon: loll sarawearsskirts
sarawearsskirts: so when people look at their plants, they think of your handmade team
projectfelt: we have promos that we put seed in
projectfelt: seends
daniellexo: (sorry to steer away from the team topic) hehe
projectfelt: seeds lol
sarawearsskirts: oh, nice, projectfelt!
BululuStudio: i took the seed from a lemon I bought, it has a year old
greenlupa: A politcal candidate once gave me a seed packet w/her info on it saying her campaign was growing
scrappychicdesigns joined the room
projectfelt: lolaness created a pdf file for us to print and assemble and then we put seeds in them
sarawearsskirts: nice!
IndieMoon: of for the ceramists - perhaps a packet of seeds with purchase of plantable pots?
projectfelt: thats cool green.
sarawearsskirts: would you mind sharing the pdf sometime?
sarawearsskirts: oh, indiemoon, good idea!
InspirationByFlorna: well, those handmade greeting cards that I bought this year had seeds on the front!
sarawearsskirts: is montezumamudd still in here?
projectfelt: sure thing
daniellexo: cute greenlupa
projectfelt: ill email you when we are done
sarawearsskirts: great!
BululuStudio: it's growing well, not so much water, well drainage
montezumamudd: Yep - great idea! I'll be sure to present to the team.
sarawearsskirts: excellent!
projectfelt: brb
sarawearsskirts: well, this has been a really awesome brainstorm!
greenlupa: Love the seed ideas!
InspirationByFlorna: yep it sure has
sarawearsskirts: are there any other questions for the day?
sarawearsskirts: i do love the seed ideas
sarawearsskirts: and the paper making
sarawearsskirts: soooo nice
IndieMoon: could also embed seeds in the paper.. and then plant it!
greenlupa: Can't wait to try papermaking with herbs!
sarawearsskirts: i'm so glad this makes us all want to get our hands dirty!
sarawearsskirts: toof un!
sarawearsskirts: *too fun!
daniellexo: i really want a garden now!
sarawearsskirts: me, too!
InspirationByFlorna: can't wait
daniellexo: darn living in downtown brooklyn ;(
daniellexo: we should make a rooftop garden here at the labs!
greenlupa: I'll let you weed mine Danielle!
IndieMoon: put one on the windowsill at EtsyLabs, Danielle
daniellexo: hahah
sarawearsskirts: excellent. well, we can wrap this up then, but keep brainstorming, and share all of these ideas with your teams!
BululuStudio: danielle aloe grow well indoor
IndieMoon: herb gardens don't have to be big... and they are so easy to grow
daniellexo: im going to buy some plants on etsy and get to it :)
BululuStudio: and has some much properties
sarawearsskirts: yeah, erin has plants at the labs, but otherwise there aren't many plants
sarawearsskirts: nice!
InspirationByFlorna: I have a little garden outside but I can't use it much because of the deer, so I grow on the balcony
montezumamudd left the room
sarawearsskirts: alright, thanks everyone for coming!
daniellexo: oh yes aloe is nice to have around
sarawearsskirts: great discussion!
sarawearsskirts: minutes will post soon!
