About

Pet Portrait Artist Carolyn Finnell

I live in Mandeville, LA with my husband, Terry. Our charming (translation small and closet-less) craftsman style home is just two blocks from the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. I studied Fine Art at College and spent many years as a graphic designer/art director/illustrator, working in advertising and winning a few Addy Awards. I always intended to explore painting "one of these days". After experiencing the wrath of Hurricane Katrina first-hand I began to wonder why I was waiting.

I now spend much of my life in my studio expressing the surprising beauty I find in the “everyday”. Creating art is a life affirming experience.

IS ART AN INVESTMENT?

Sometimes people ask me for advice on collecting art. They’ve been told that art should be an investment and now they are afraid to buy because they might buy the wrong thing. “How do I start investing in art?” they ask me. I always answer the same way.

“Buy art you love,” I say. “Hang it on your wall and enjoy it. Ten years from now it may be worth more or it may not. The exact same thing is true if you buy stock, but you can’t hang the stock on your wall and have it bring you joy everyday.”
