Sarina Brewer's Profile

About

Sarina Brewer began creating unique artistic expressions from animal materials 25 years ago. She received formal training at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1992. During her formative years she worked predominantly with found objects, most of which were animal remains. These early works were shrines to the animals they incorporated, creating final resting places for them just like the dead sparrows and pet goldfish who were lavished with elaborate funerals upon their passing during her childhood. Then, as now, her pieces are an homage to the animals they incorporate. The process of preparing animal remains for use in her sculpture and abstract paintings slowly evolved into taxidermy over the years.

Throughout the course of her career her primary directive has been to use only ethically procured animal materials. No animals are killed for the purpose of creating her art. All animal materials used in her work would have been discarded by others if she had not salvaged them. She utilizes roadkill, discarded livestock, animals that died of natural causes, and destroyed nuisance animals that are donated to her. She believes wasting any part of an animal is disrespectful to Mother Nature so out of respect for the animal she adheres to a very strict "waste not, want not" policy in her studio. Virtually every part of the animal is recycled in some manner.

A childhood preoccupation with mythology and anomalies of nature has always been an underlying influence in her work and now manifests itself in everything she creates. By incorporating her past formal art education with her passion for biology and the bizarre, she has carved out a unique niche for herself in the art world. Her work gained worldwide attention in 2004 when she and two of her colleagues introduced the term "Rogue Taxidermy" into global vernacular at their inaugural exhibition, hence spearheading a Rogue Taxidermy movement in modern art. Due to their efforts the genre of Rogue Taxidermy is now recognized as a form of pop-surrealism and lowbrow art

THE BIRTHPLACE OF ROGUE TAXIDERMY:
www.RogueTaxidermy.com

The Rogue Taxidermy Guild: The Minnesota Association of Rogue Taxidermists (M.A.R.T) is an artist collective of individuals who share a common philosophy and passion. The group was formed in 2004 with fellow visionaries Robert Marbury and Scott Bibus, hence spearheading what has become a Rogue Taxidermy movement as the term "Rogue Taxidermy" was introduced for the first time. The group was created as a means to connect with other artists working in taxidermy related mediums and has since proven to be an invaluable resource for networking with others working in this realm. All members adhere to a strict ethics charter, using only animals procured in an ethical and environmentally responsible manner. Our mission is to bring like-minded artists together from here and abroad to unite under the genre of Rogue Taxidermy, but most importantly M.A.R.T. is in existence to create dialogue, evoke thought, educate, and expand people's horizons. We are here to exchange ideas with not only other artists, but anyone who is interested in this art form. We invite you to join us at www.RogueTaxidermy.com"
