My mom was right. Getting sewing lessons was a much better gift than the pair of acid-washed Guess jeans I wanted for my 11th birthday.
Making costumes makes me happy. I have always liked to sew but never really had the patience for the precision of sewing real clothes. Costumes are fun to make because you can work quickly and it doesn’t matter if the stitching is perfect, in fact I think it looks better when it’s not.
Helping others make costumes makes me even happier. Investing your time to make something is a precious gift. Making things for ourselves and others, whether it is sewing or cooking, reminds us that we don’t have to purchase everything or rely on others to fix things or do things for us.
