: My grandmother taught me to crochet to teach me patience when I was about 11 years old. She never used patterns (except those in her memory); she would see something interesting, look at it closely, and figure out how to make it. I learned that from her too, but also learned that new patterns could teach me additional ways to combine stitches. Having crocheted for nearly fifty years, I have made everything from doilies to lace curtains, and from mufflers to coats and tapestries. Crocheting meant I could make gifts for loved ones that are nicer than what I could afford otherwise. Now that I am semi-retired, I have more time to devote to making little pleasures and keepsakes for others. I try to make things that are easy care, and when possible, from sustainable fiber sources.
