I’m drawn to beautiful objects and elegant forms and I’m inspired by whimsical ideas, which I try to integrate into my ceramic designs. I’m drawn to beautiful objects and elegant forms and I’m inspired by whimsical ideas, which I try to integrate into my ceramic designs. As an artist working primarily with porcelain, my goals are simple: I want to create functional and decorative pottery designs for enchanted living. Whether I’m making functional, decorative, or sculptural work I hope to bring the inspiration I find in the creative process to you through these unique pieces.

I took my first pottery course north of Chicago, Illinois in 1989. This introductory class opened up a world of expressive and creative possibilities. I learned to craft functional pieces, mix and test glazes, and fire my work using a range of interesting techniques. When I left for college, I channeled this newfound creative enthusiasm into academic interests and studied art history, became a Fulbright scholar in 2001, then a professor and art historian, and Curator of European Art at a major midwestern museum.

I didn’t step into a pottery studio again until 2001, but I never lost the deep desire to live creatively, nor did I lose my attraction to clay’s expressive possibilities. While I was researching, writing, teaching and curating, I sketched my own pottery designs and I collected ideas, odd trinkets, fanciful postcards, old documents from stationary stores overseas, and other inspirational ephemera. In retrospect, the years outside of the pottery studio proved to be an incredibly fertile time which set the stage for my career in ceramics. It’s the memories, materials and impressions from my earlier life that serve as a point of departure for many of my current designs.

The turrets, finials, towers, steeples and domes of Prague, where I spent many happy times and often referred to as the city of 100 spires, inform so much of my overall design aesthetic. Inspired by the gleaming finials that adorned this Central European skyline, I’ve reinterpreted the elegant lines and ornate details of the spires on the potter’s wheel creating unique finial designs that adorn the lids of ceramic boxes and containers, or form the distinctive ornamental bases of my hanging and pedestal planters.
