What do a paper grocery bag and some scrap upholstery fabric have to do with our shop? It’s how we got our start making bow ties last summer!

Let me explain. I’m Kate, a gal who always has a project going, and my hubby JoeMoe has been a bow tie fan for as long as I’ve known him. So it seemed like a perfect fit to use my skills to create something he loved. One night after dinner, I took a beloved bow tie from his closet, made a pattern by tracing a careful outline onto a brown paper bag (without getting ink on the tie, I promise) and started sewing.

Not expecting the first try to succeed, that first bow tie was made from a light blue upholstery fabric covered in dark blue seashells – a remnant left over from when a friend recovered one of her chairs. Nevertheless, hubby loved it and wore it to work the next day!

Since then, there have been many tweaks – making sure the curves on the pattern piece were symmetrical; experimenting with half a dozen different types of interfacing, finding adjustable sliders, and of course, new fabrics!

All our bow ties are made from either 100% silk or 100% cotton fabric (unless noted otherwise), cut on the bias, and lined with a soft interfacing for shape and durability.

Men’s bow ties are made free-style (self-tying), but any tie I make can be turned into a pre-tied bow tie for no additional charge. Additionally, if you’re a bow tie aficionado like my hubby, you can send me your neck measurements and I can make a custom-length bow tie for you (no adjustable slider necessary).
