Ina Drosu's Profile
Practiced before the Roman era, painting and gilding on glass was rediscovered and popularized in the 1760’s by Frenchman and Art amateur Jean-Baptiste Glomy (1711-86) - thus the term “verre églomisé”. Before and since, the technique has had long stretches of obscurity, and repeated periods of resurgence. My current offering consists of glass vessels that are hand-painted in cold oil and gilded in metal leaf. For those of you unfamiliar with this process, reverse painting involves the application of paint to the back side of glass, while gilding is the application of tissue-thin squares of metal to prepared surfaces. My designs are one-of-a-kind even when several pieces share motifs. Application is generally fully spontaneous and all vessels are signed and dated by me.
