About

I have been crocheting accessories since I was a child, making hats, handbags, vests, blankets and scarves. When I grew weary of fighting off all of the hazards of wearing a 6 foot scarf, I knew I had to merge form with function and I was inspired to create a variety of fun, warm and stylish mini-scarves that I named THROATKOATS™.

I began creating THROATKOATS™ in the late 1990s out of necessity. I was tired of overheating when shopping and having no place to put the scarf, of tripping over 6 feet of yarn/fabric, of getting the scarves caught in revolving doors and escalators , of being tapped on the shoulder by a stranger and asked if that was my scarf down at the other end of the block, of getting smacked in the face when a gust of wind crossed my path. Why did I need 6 feet of fabric for a neck that was less than 12 inches in circumference ??? True, many of the looks were “trendy”...

True, many of the looks were “trendy” and “hip” (okay, I’m aging myself a bit), but there had to be a way to have a really pretty, fun and warm scarf that I could tuck away in my pocket or handbag when not needed.

I came upon a scarf that came close in a boutique in Brooklyn, NY. It was a simple burgundy neckwarmer with a matching plastic burgundy toggle button that blended in with the color of the yarn. The button was secured at the very top of the scarf so it left a gap as it splayed out. It worked pretty well, but it wasn’t jazzy or fun enough and the color didn’t “pop” when I wore it with my coats. So, I went about experimenting and, many generations of TKs later, the current and evolving line of THROATKOATS™ were born.

I've been working in Higher Education most of my adult life, most recently in a part-time capacity at FIT (The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City). I first sold my THROATKOATS™ professionally (to people other than my friends and family members) at FIT. I have also been taking classes in fashion business start up. It's a lot of fun and has taught me a lot.

So while I majored in voice and photography through my schooling years, I found I really love making things with my hands. And, as I wasn't very good at "throwing pottery" I happily investing my time and creativity in making THROATKOATS™ as well as creating new products to add to my StellarVisionCreations line.

Enjoy!
