For years I’ve been drinking my coffee from cups handmade by others, loving that someone made this piece that feels so wonderful in my hand. I’ve never felt that same pleasure and satisfaction drinking from a manufactured, store-bought cup.
I have an MFA in sculpture and have been making figurative clay sculpture for ten years. The idea of making functional wares, especially generous vessels ready to be filled, became irresistible and I put my sculpture on the back burner. I'm finding great pleasure knowing that others will use and enjoy the pieces I’ve made. And I love that I’m taking part in the age old tradition of making pottery for use in the home.
I form each piece thinking about the way it will fit in the hand, how it will hold its contents and what it will look like on the table. I want these pieces of pottery to be used,...
