About

I am very happy to bring The Thrifting Magpie to Etsy. I hope you will find as much excitement and pleasure in The Thrifting Magpie’s finds, as I do in finding them.

My goal is to bring the customer service and strong relationships that I previously had in my bricks and mortar shop to The Thrifting Magpie on Etsy.

I think the best way to start to do that is to let you know a bit about me.

In 2008, I traded shop for studies, becoming a student again. I jumped across the pond (a very big one…the Atlantic) to go to university in my favorite, favorite city (L♥ND♥N) to pursue my MA in creative writing and finally, finally write that book.

Fashion and writing have always been my two loves, the defining forces in my life, since I was little playing dress-up…

Fashion and writing have always been my two loves, the defining forces in my life, since I was little playing dress-up in my mom’s chic castoffs and staying after school to work on my stories with teachers who encouraged my writing.

Now, I divide my time between Virginia and London, getting the best of both worlds!

(This is why sometimes my listings may have shipping costs based from the UK and other listings from the USA. Right now, I am in Virginia enjoying sweet tea, Southern comfort food and time with family and friends, especially shopping with my mom.)

My life has always been a bit like a magpie’s, going from one shiny opportunity to the next…

I lived in Prague for four years and it was here that my love affair with London began. I worked on bringing British designers to Prague and Czech designers to London. I also produced fashion shows and styled for fashion magazines.

I’ve also worked as a model booker and stylist for a large department store. That was a great job! I made monthly trips to New York, staying in posh hotels, dining at fancy restaurants, going to Broadway shows and conducting model castings and seeing that face-to-face is very different from the end results of photo shop in the advertising department.

I was also the fashion editor and I wrote a fashion column at a now defunct alternative weekly newspaper. The column focused on my fashion disasters, wardrobe malfunctions and general mode mishaps. (I would never have exposed myself like that in my high school ‘The Clothes Line’ column.)

And, I owned an upscale consignment shop that carried designer, vintage and high street clothing, accessories and decorative items. I also sourced items for the business.

One of my crowning achievements—both personally and professionally—is the partnership I began with two women’s domestic abuse organizations when I owned my physical shop. I held in-store events for the organizations, fundraised and donated bags and bags of clothing to go to women who had fled abusive relationships.

My goal is to build The Thrifting Magpie and do even more for domestic abuse organizations. I am at the planning stages right now.

Some other tangential thoughts:

I believe that perfection lies in imperfection. (Probably why I am drawn to objects that are beautiful but may have a chip, a crack, a stain….life isn’t perfect, and thank goodness it’s not. Life is messy, confusing, challenging, creative, lovely and beautiful. Just like, I think, my finds.)

I believe in surrounding yourself with beautiful things you love. (Of course people you love always, always, always come first.)

I believe if you want to know about a place or about history and where we, collectively, have been, visit a charity shop or thrift store…an interactive history book.

I believe the two most important things in life are love and learning. I want you to love, love, love your experience at The Thrifting Magpie and any purchases you may make, and, I want to learn from you what you love about the shop and what could use a little more TLC (Thrifty Love Chic).

The Thrifting Magpie, just like my life, is a work in progress. Thank you for reading this far down (friends and family have always said I go on and on and on…) and as we say in the South, I hope ya’ll will come back real soon.
