Thomas Klopfenstein's Profile

About

All my life I've been making and building to create something out of nothing; from building Soap Box Derby racers as a kid, to the furniture building of today. I grew up in Crestline, Ohio in the 1950's among craftsmen, artisans and teachers. There were men in our town who painted signs, built hot rods, worked with wood and fabricated metal. I rode my bike all over town to hang out with these guys and watch what they did. They were all influences for me.

Two of those men were my cousins Jim and Bill Klopfenstein, who taught art and industrial arts and were master craftsmen. They also founded Klopfenstein Art Equipment, designing and building potter's wheels and artists' easels. Their approach to design and craftsmanship inspires me to this day.

At Klopfenstein Custom Furniture, I design and build custom made, wood furniture and one-of-a-kind heirloom pieces. I'll work with any wood from painted pine to exotic woods such as ebony, purple heart and bubinga. I can build custom furniture for your home that fits perfectly in an odd-sized niche or build an entertainment center that looks like it's part of your home's architecture.

Woodworking, woodcarving and metal fabricating are my favorite elements and can be beautiful on their own merit. However, I do enjoy using two or more of those elements in combination when I can. The industrial-look table is a good example of combining elements. The framework of the tabletop is made of sheet metal, the brackets at the top of the table leg are metal and the center of the tabletop and the legs are made of cherry.

The items for sale on etsy are just a few of the pieces I have created. If you have an idea of your own, I can also work together with you on a design and ultimately create an heirloom addition to your home. I would love to work with you and look forward to hearing from you.
