ARTIST'S STATEMENT: Amy & Michael

Images inspired by imagination...

*Amy*: In my otherworldly-inspired pieces, I start with a photograph and during the editing process, let the subject and composition lead me into a fictitious place and time. I’m often transported into the world of a favorite story or poem, phrase in a book or piece of music. Through the creative process I get to travel to imaginary places both those familiar though oft-read stories and poems and those altogether new to me. Things that spark my imagination include stories such as A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, Something Wicked This Way Comes (and others) by Ray Bradbury, and poetry by Dylan Thomas, Yeats and Poe. I love to translate the language, descriptions and sense of wonder in these writings into my images.

*Michael*: When I go out to photograph, it’s like there is a blank, empty canvas waiting for me. I never know what I might find, or the way I’m going to catch it that day – you never have the exact same lighting, scene, and situation twice, and that’s part of the draw of photography for me. I like looking at things from a different perspective and photographing them in a way that other people might not immediately recognize.

All of our TTV shots are done using a Nikon D80 and a vintage Kodak Duaflex, with a contraption Michael built (the thing actually uses a sock!)

Amy's favorite things:

my husband and our 2 silly cats,

my family and friends of course,

autumn,

snowflakes,

cold winter evenings,

Ray Bradbury stories,

the smell of turpentine and oil paints,

and mysterious things!

I'm a big fan of Ovaltine (original AND rich chocolate!)!

My inspiration comes from color, nature and dreams.
