About

Saija currently resides in the California desert with her loving and supportive husband and mischevious Savannah cat Hiisi (named after a wicked Finnish folklore spirit, which turned out to be a good fit!). Being from both Finland and the U.S., and growing up in other countries such as Japan and Tanzania, have definitely shaped her works and fascinated her with their culutural traditions and stories. Born February 16th makes her an Aquarius, which while she doesn't always trust the newspaper horoscopes, she does believe her sign is otherwise spot on. She has been an artist and crafter since she can remember, with a lifelong passion for the strange objects the world holds- the stranger the better!

The approach Saija has torward her couture pieces is much like the one she has toward her artwork; each piece has a story to tell, a feeling to capture, and is never boring or one-sided. A core philosophy behind her works is finding a balance of opposites. Natural + Industrial. Morbid+ Sweet. Dainty + Bold. A piece will never simply be "cute" or "creepy", it will always have at least a little something to counter it's main theme. Things of a dark and macabre nature interest her, and she enjoys being able to take that essence and find beauty in it. She mixes the natural with the unnatural, and sometimes the supernatural elements of the world as well. It is through these deeply thought out layers of character that the artist's "tongue in cheek" view on the world is interpreted and the fantasies of her imagination are brought to life. To wear her works are to be a part of that world!

In terms of materials, Saija views her use of taxidermy materials as a form of recycling and bringing new life to pieces, a reflection of taxidermy couture's motto, "Memento Mori" meaning, "remeber you must die one day too". Instead of seeing death as dark and gloomy, her pieces reflect the natural cycle of life and see the lighter side, and no animals have been harmed for the sake of her work.
