Background:
Heather Braun-Dahl graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2001 with a major in ceramics and painting. After living in Spain for a few months, she settled back in North Vancouver with her husband and new little baby. Looking for a way to keep her hands in the making process while having a new baby to care for, Heather started working out of a clay studio in a community center for a few years. Slowly she started selling her wares to her friends and family and the idea of dahlhaus was formed. After setting up a studio in 2007, Heather had a small show in a little shop in Deep Cove where she made a line of work called 'the Red Dot Collection'. The red dot (a circular shape she had pulled from her abstract paintings) had come to mean a connecting point between people. In her paintings, the connecting point happened in the streets; on her pots, the connecting point happened as a bowl was passed around the table in the company of friends. Soon there were more red dots, and then there were patterns, and slowly they became poppies (and ginko leaves, and hollyhocks and stripes), with stems. That's how the red dot collection became the poppy collection, and that's what all the fuss seems to be about- poppies and connections, food and friends.
