We are Andrew Gray and Elizabeth Bryant, and we've been making our Footed Plattes™ since 2006, using only locally and sustainably harvested or salvaged hardwoods, hand rubbed with organic olive oil. Our housewares and furniture are available in many galleries, markets and shops in NYC and the greater Hudson Valley, and we are pleased to offer them worldwide via Etsy.

Our workshop is located in the Catskill Mountains near the town of Woodstock, New York, where we work to build beautifully designed, unique objects we hope you'll be proud to have in your home. Our furniture and housewares are crafted exclusively from locally, sustainably harvested or salvaged hardwoods, hand rubbed with natural, organic, food-safe products like olive oil and pure tung oil. We are strong supporters of businesses that strive, as we do, to make thoughtful, environmentally sustainable choices.

Gray Works partners with micro-mills of the Hudson Valley and Catskills to harvest and collect the material we use, at times milling the wood ourselves. Every item in our shop has a story behind it, usually of a tree felled because it was dying, or one that was brought down in a storm. One of those stories is outlined here: http://www.etsy.com/listing/55136040/pine-slab-and-steel-picnic-table-custom

Our hardwood tables, benches, bowls and Footed Plattes have gorgeously figured grain, with rustic details that are made stable in the drying and finishing process and add to the unique beauty of each piece.

THE FOOTED PLATTE™
Footed Plattes™ is a term we invented to describe the versatility of the cutting board/serving platters we've been making since 2006. We knew we had to give these objects a name that described more than the term “cutting board” could impart, so we invented Footed Plattes! "Platte" is a descriptive geographical term in use in the Catskill Mountains, having to do with the rocky area where glaciers once carved their way through. Platte Clove is a breathtaking narrow gorge in the Catskill escarpment, known both for its haunting beauty and its treacherous cliffs. "Platte" also means "flat" in German, which is a reflection of the region's early settlers.

NATURAL OILS
We use only 100% natural and/or organic oils on our wood furniture and housewares. Using olive oil as a wood conditioner is a centuries-old tradition, and we consider it the safest, most organic product to use. We are pleased to provide professional references to confirm the safety and health benefits of using olive oil on wood cutting boards. For more information, see our care policy: http://www.etsy.com/shop/grayworksdesign/policy

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
We support Catskill Mountainkeeper, a non-profit grassroots advocacy organization dedicated to preserving the six counties of the Catskill region. We have pledged to donate a percentage of our sales to Catskill Mountainkeeper in an effort to give something back to the wilderness that supports our work and our lives.
