About

Who would have thought that cancer would end up being the catalyst for a blockmaking business? Not me that's for sure, but that is exactly what happened. My daughter was diagnosed this past year with colon cancer at the age of 19 (exceptionally rare at that age...she was the youngest ever at the hospital where she was treated).

Her diagnosis spurred me to start a Relay for Life team at the school where I work. As a fundraiser for Relay for Life, we held a silent auction and I wanted to make something to put in it to raise money. So I made blocks. A set of cute summer blocks that I worked up from wood we had around the house and all my card making/scrapbooking items. I posted them on facebook and immediately people responded. They wanted their own personalized set of blocks so I talked my friend Stephani into working with me. We recruited my other daughter, who has amazing artistic talent to join us and It's A Block Party was born.

What you see here on Etsy is just a small collection of all the blocks that we have made as a variety of requests have come in from different places. You can see more on our blog (http://itsablockparty.blogspot.com).

We are teachers that make handmade blocks on the side. We love power tools and enjoy the creative process of taking a piece of wood and creating a unique handmade gift from it. We do all the work by hand. We do the sawing, sanding, painting, and decorating ourselves.

Helping the environment is another aspect of our business. We work hard to locate wood for our projects that would've ended up in the landfill. By using this reclaimed wood we feel like we are taking something that was being discarded and giving it a new life. That means each of our items are unique. Sometimes our finds are older, weathered wood. Sometimes they are remnants from construction projects, etc. We are happy to do this small part for Mother Earth!
