Joel Bridger's Profile

About

Joel, from Chesapeake, Virginia, moved to Philadelphia in 2009 to partcipate in an inner city education student mentor program, City Year, Fell in love with Philly and decided to stay for awhile.

How did I find out about City Year? A random message from a good friend on Facebook at the right time in my life; I made the biggest commitment in my life based on passion rather than Career Fields, Money, and Fame.

I met and saw a lot of very positive and enlightening people and things that year in my life. I also saw a lot of smoke and mirrors in the philosophies of our education system here in America and seemingly many other places. I also noticed what the neglect of a community can lead to: poverty; reliance on a public education system to educate their youth out of poverty…

I met and saw a lot of very positive and enlightening people and things that year in my life. I also saw a lot of smoke and mirrors in the philosophies of our education system here in America and seemingly many other places. I also noticed what the neglect of a community can lead to: poverty; reliance on a public education system to educate their youth out of poverty. I also saw what a small committed group of people could do within a community in need. I also came out with a better perspective and feel for society in America and know thousands of other people my age got that same experience in their own way. City Year changed my life.

After City Year, I enrolled at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. As a college student paying my own way, I started a screen printing company (Socially Conscious Shirts aka SCS aka SCSTEES) in 2011 in my basement, in what has been called the "most dangerous" and "highest drug trafficking" neighborhood in Philadelphia. Ever seen Rocky? Yeah, down the street from where that house was filmed.

Started at Temple, First as a Psychology major, a year later as an Education Major and Psych Minor, and two years later a Political Science Major and Psych Minor, and three years later a dropout and business owner making more than both of my parents combined in my first year of business.

I am only proud because my friends and family are proud of me and they are the people I have relied on and whom have supported me through all of this.

I am proud because I live in one of the "worst neighborhoods in America" and have lived in harmony with my neighbors whom have become close friends and allies.

As YOU should be proud TOO about YOUR accomplishments in life.

As YOU should be proud TOO about YOUR community.

Our Community.

Our World.

"Help us, help others" is my motto. I want to set an example for how businesses can find success through being socially responsible and helping others.

I think of shirts as Easter Eggs or Old Baseball Cards; each one is unique and better yet, handmade in Philly.
