I love putting flair in my hair, and I love taking raw materials and creating beautiful things.
I started out by making headbands, and experimenting with different looks that I liked - combining flowers and feathers, adding birds and other accoutrement. Some of the headbands and barrettes I make are classy and demure, other are funky and whimsical. I make headbands to match my moods, things that make me smile.
Making headdresses sort of progressed from there - like any artist, my work grew. There are many things that inspire me here in New Orleans, and Mardi Gras - my most favorite time of the year - is a great time of the year to be outrageous. I love going out to parades, or going out in the Quarters dressed and disguised and turning heads. I love wearing things that no one else will have, which is why I make most of my costumes. Headdresses are perfect because you almost don't need much more costume with it, it's a costume in itself.
The couture custom wedding line started as a wedding present for my cousin. I created all the feather bouquets and boutonnieres for the wedding party, and they were an enormous hit. The wedding planner was ecstatic, and people kept on asking me questions about my work. I really enjoyed working in another medium, and decided to offer it to others who wanted something truly unique for their wedding accessories.
You never know where your craft and talent will lead you.
I have another Etsy site that I have had for many years - www.SignatureMarigold.etsy.com. This site focuses on my statement zipper necklaces, hand-painted vintage purses, and segmented cuffs made from my original photos, foreign money, and collected fortunes. Please stop by that shop to peruse my work.
I see each piece I create as a work of art. We hang art on our walls, and place art on the shelves, put sculptures on pedestals, and that’s where many pieces stay. I don’t think that art should be limited to those constraints, and my goal is to create art for our bodies – so that each day we can partake in making ourselves artful, and each day we expose others to art.
I am grateful to be an artist who lives in the beautiful, magical, haunting, music-filled, and complicated city of New Orleans. Thanks for visiting my shop - enjoy!
Wear your art.
Love,
Marigold
