About

Hi!
My name is Mary and I was born and raised in Miami, FL. I attended New World School of the Arts in Miami and then moved to Kansas City, MO where I graduated with a BFA in fiber/textiles from the Kansas City Art Institute. I worked at a wonderful high-end clothing shop, where I further developed my skills in pattern drafting, garment cutting, clothing construction, fittings and alterations and a meticulous attention to detail. I also acquired a love and appreciation for vintage Japanese textiles and unique fabrics and objects from all over the world.

Living in Miami again, I realize how much my visual and artistic aesthetics are influenced by my surroundings. I love the beautiful blues of the ocean and the lush green and vibrant colors that make Miami so special to me. Now that I am back where I belong, I feel confident to finally listen to my artistic…

About

Now that I am back where I belong, I feel confident to finally listen to my artistic voice and create beautiful objects that are true to my sensibilities.

In my textiles, paintings, and ink drawings, I have always enjoyed having something existing to start with and manipulating it to create something new. I love colors, rows of colors, stacks of organized colors…visual organization in the madness of vibrant colors. I tend to work in series so that I can have groupings of colors and textures to display.

I decided to use handbags as my medium one summer when I was out looking for a purse and I couldn’t find one that suited me anywhere. I figured that I would just have to make one myself. The problem was that I couldn’t stop with just one, I needed to make more, I needed to combine more colors and experiment with mixing patterns and colors that might seem odd at first but make sense as a whole. It was the perfect culmination of my art and obsessions.

Since I didn’t have a full dyeing and printing facility here in Miami to create my own fabric, I had free reign to fuel my passion and addiction for collecting beautiful fabric from all over the world. I’m particularly drawn to vintage Japanese kimono silk and bold patterned cottons.

All of my handbags and accessories are one-of-a-kind. This is a challenge I have chosen, as an artist, to never repeat a combination of fabrics. I also like to work in odd numbers, especially the number three. It’s fun for me and keeps me on my toes artistically and it offers the customer an item that no one else will ever have.

Please note that due to the handmade nature of the handbags, irregularities may occur - giving each piece its beauty and character. Each item is handmade by me. I draft the patterns, cut, piece, and stitch the fabric, construct the handbags and accessories, take the photographs, etc. I love being a part of the whole process.

All of my handbags and accessories are made in a smoke-free home. However, I do have three sweet cats named Honey, Sushi and Joey who like to supervise all of my work in studio and keep me company.
