About Maya

It started with an unwillingness to let go of a gorgeous turquoise large-scale snakeskin tote purchased in New York City. In the process of repairing too-short, worn out handles on this beloved tote, Maya realized she could make another bag like this one, only better. She ordered some pink crocco print leather and, using the turquoise bag as her inspiration, created her vision of a perfect bag. Strangers stopped her mid-stride to ask about that pink bag and friends requested that she make one for them. A few bags ordered by friends became many more bags ordered by people who simply saw one of Maya’s handcrafted handbags on someone else. Each bag was custom designed for the intended owner. It started with an unwillingness to let go of a gorgeous turquoise large-scale snakeskin tote purchased in New York City. She ordered some pink crocco print leather and, using the turquoise bag as her inspiration, created her vision of a perfect bag. Unwittingly, Maya began her handbag design company.

Artistry is in her blood. Growing up in a funky little artist town in Marin County, California, with professional artists as parents, creative expression is like air to Maya and her family – essential for living. Her father, John Bauer, designs and carves wood furniture that has been auctioned by Sotheby’s and displayed at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Maya’s mom, Hannah Garrett, designed artist quality, one-of-a-kind custom wood puzzles. In this atmosphere of creation and inspiration, Maya began early designing and sewing her own unique clothing and apprenticed in jewelry design while she was still in high school. This passion for creativity and design has intensified through the years and is the driving force behind Maya Moon Designs.

Maya is first and foremost a designer. Design is her passion. Since business isn’t all passion and thrill, she also handles (with blessed help from her husband, Brian) virtually all other aspects of running Maya Moon Designs, including marketing and sales, production, and finances. And while design is her passion, her two boys, Dean and Kaden (7 years old and 9 year old, respectively), are her greatest blessings. She balances running Maya Moon Designs with a strong and heartfelt commitment to be with her boys and husband as much as possible.
