My work deals with the evolving issues of wildlife, its natural state, its dissolution and the attempt by many to direct its path. The management of wildlife is, in its purest sense, a contradiction. The intent of my art is to mimic the way we, as humans, have tried to “manage” the way nature should exist either based on our learned scientific knowledge of how ecosystems function, or contrarily in order to suit human needs.

Using traditional hand-drawn hardground etching, drypoint and aquatint techniques, I depict these “managed” landscapes wherein each species – be it wolf, bison, bear, finch, osprey, or variety of flora - is placed and printed by hand within a grid. I etch one individual species per plate so that, when combined with, and on top of each other, a virtual landscape is created. In 2011 I focused on the greater Yellowstone ecosystem. In 2012, I have been focusing on the surroundings around my new home in Marin County, CA.

MINI BIO

After attending Whitman College, I transferred to the San Francisco Art Institute where I earned a BFA in printmaking, using my summers (and spring breaks) to venture into the backcountry. After graduating I was lured by some very convincing art school classmates to move to Los Angeles to open an art gallery in a warehouse in the industrial area of downtown. While in Los Angeles, I applied to, and was accepted to a teaching fellows program through which I earned a Masters Degree in Education. I spent the next few years teaching math and science to students with learning and emotional disabilities at a high school in East Los Angeles and then for four years in San Francisco’s juvenile hall teaching everything from Biology and Algebra to working as a Resource Specialist to Art.

In 2009, inspired by my two children and husband, I decided to return to my original life’s passion – making art about the places I love. I became an artist-in-residence at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley in 2010.
