My name is Mortira, and I am a life-long lover of beads. I have been working with beads in some way or another for most of my life, and I continue to look for new ways to create beautiful, quality jewelry, that is as kind to the environment as possible.

I believe that there are only two causes worth fighting for - children and the environment. If we make these issues a priority, everything else will fall into place.

I try to be as green as I can in everything that I do, and to use products that have a positive social track record.

As a part of these efforts, I have made an attempt to lessen the impact that my artwork has on the world, and I now avoid using major components made with metals of any kind. All of the beaded pieces you find in this shop are either clasp-free, or have custom clasps made from matching beads.

I also try to avoid using mined gemstones and hard plastics, preferring to use glass wherever possible, because it is more sustainable. It is my goal to show that glass can be just as beautiful and precious as materials that have higher ethical, economical and environmental costs.

I am also cautious about using animal products in my work. I avoid components made from endangered and threatened species. I have never used abalone or red coral in any of my designs. I do enjoy the look of shell, freshwater pearls and carved bone, but I try to use these sparingly.

Some exceptions: I will occasionally use found objects - metals and plastics which can be re-purposed for art jewelry. Some glass beads also have metals in the finish, though I try to avoid plated and galvanized beads. My beading thread is made from nylon, and makes for more durable beadwork than organic threads.

My favorite inspirations are nature and history, and I often try to use beads to paint a picture, or create an image that can be recognized and appreciated. When I sit down to design a piece, my goal is to create something that will turn heads. Every month, I challenge myself to create at least 3 items within a specific theme. Sometimes they work, and sometimes I end up with a piece that only I would wear!

I am very message friendly, and I welcome all questions, comments and features! Thank you for visiting me here on Etsy.
